RIM sticking with consumer goods, just 'refocusing' on enterprise

RIM
Some people got the wrong idea yesterday when RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins said the company was refocusing on the enterprise market and would stop trying to be "all things to all people." Many took the post-earnings call comment to mean that RIM would be exiting the consumer market, an assumption that didn't seem like much of a stretch considering its failure to capture the imagination of users outside the office place. Things weren't made any better when Heins seemingly left the door open for the manufacturer to leave the hardware business entirely. However, in a statement, managing director of global sales and regional marketing Patrick Spence clarified that "the claim that RIM has said it will withdraw from the consumer market is wholly misleading." He continued to explain that, "whilst we announced plans to refocus our efforts on our core strengths, and on our enterprise customer base, we were very explicit that we will continue to build on our strengths to go after targeted consumer segments." In particular there still seems to be hope that BBM can become a staple in the lives of young trend setters, but it'll probably need some help from cross platform clients to do so.

Bees 'self-medicate' when infected with some pathogens

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Research from North Carolina State University shows that honey bees "self-medicate" when their colony is infected with a harmful fungus, bringing in increased amounts of antifungal plant resins to ward off the pathogen.

"The colony is willing to expend the energy and effort of its worker bees to collect these resins," says Dr. Michael Simone-Finstrom, a postdoctoral research scholar in NC State's Department of Entomology and lead author of a paper describing the research. "So, clearly this behavior has evolved because the benefit to the colony exceeds the cost."

Wild honey bees normally line their hives with propolis, a mixture of plant resins and wax that has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Domesticated honey bees also use propolis, to fill in cracks in their hives. However, researchers found that, when faced with a fungal threat, bees bring in significantly more propolis -- 45 percent more, on average. The bees also physically removed infected larvae that had been parasitized by the fungus and were being used to create fungal spores.

Researchers know propolis is an effective antifungal agent because they lined some hives with a propolis extract and found that the extract significantly reduced the rate of infection.

And apparently bees can sometimes distinguish harmful fungi from harmless ones, since colonies did not bring in increased amounts of propolis when infected with harmless fungal species. Instead, the colonies relied on physically removing the spores.

However, the self-medicating behavior does have limits. Honey bee colonies infected with pathogenic bacteria did not bring in significantly more propolis -- despite the fact that the propolis also has antibacterial properties. "There was a slight increase, but it was not statistically significant," Simone-Finstrom says. "That is something we plan to follow up on."

There may be a lesson here for domestic beekeepers. "Historically, U.S. beekeepers preferred colonies that used less of this resin, because it is sticky and can be difficult to work with," Simone-Finstrom says. "Now we know that this is a characteristic worth promoting, because it seems to offer the bees some natural defense."

Press Conference Held To Annouce Name Of NFL Stadium In LAGetty Images

It has long been believed that the NFL will return to Los Angeles only when two viable stadium projects emerge, which then can be squeezed against each other until the NFL emerges with the sweetest possible deal.

The man in charge of one of the two current stadium projects apparently isn?t willing to be squeezed.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that billionaire Philip Anschutz, whose company (AEG) wants to build a downtown stadium, has not revised his proposal more than three months after Commissioner Roger Goodell and Patriots owner Robert Kraft explained that AEG?s intention to purchase, at a discounted rate, a minority stake in the team that moves to the stadium will not be acceptable.? That message was conveyed to Anschutz during a December meeting in Denver, when the Patriots traveled there to play the Broncos.

?It was friendly, but boiled down to the view that no NFL owner would accept the terms proposed,? a source told Cole.? ?If [AEG] wanted to get that much control over an NFL franchise, their only option would be to buy a team.? If they were willing to back off the control and buy a [limited partnership] stake for a reasonable price, then a shared interest in selling suites/clubs/sponsorships could be worked out.?

The lack of progress between Anschutz and the NFL could soon derail the effort to build the stadium.? As Cole explains it, politicians in Los Angeles may soon shift their focus toward expanding the Los Angeles Convention Center.

That would leave one viable stadium project in the Los Angeles area, via Ed Roski?s shovel-ready, open-air project in the City of Industry.? In October, Roski offered to ?hand over the 600 acres? to the team that moves there, with the team responsible for financing the stadium and Roski buying a share of the franchise at market value.

Still, without the AEG project to give Roski a reason to go even farther, the league?s absence from the L.A. market may continue indefinitely into the future.

PFT: Why did Reebok try to sell Tebow jerseys?

Mike Shanahan, Donovan McNabbAP

Donovan McNabb was a failure playing for Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan in Washington, and McNabb thinks Robert Griffin III will be a failure in the Shanahans? offense, too. But that won?t be Griffin?s fault.

Asked on ESPN First Take if Griffin is a good fit with the offense the Shanahans run in Washington, McNabb answered, ?No.?

McNabb, who was benched in his only season playing for the Redskins, said that if the Redskins, as expected, take Griffin with the second overall pick in the NFL draft, the father-and-son Shanahan combination will try to force Griffin into their own offensive system, rather than modifying their offense to capitalize on Griffin?s strengths.

?A lot of times ego gets too involved when it comes to being in Washington,? McNabb said.

Where ego comes into play, McNabb said, is that the Shanahans think a quarterback has to fit himself into their offense ? the same offense that Kyle Shanahan ran when he was the Houston Texans? offensive coordinator ? rather than tailoring their offense to accentuate the quarterback?s strengths.

?Here?s a guy coming out who?s very talented, mobile, strong arm, we?ve already heard he?s intelligent, football mind,? McNabb said of Griffin. ?Are you going to cater the offense around his talent, and what he?s able to do, or are you going to bring the Houston offense with Matt Schaub over to him and have him kind of be embedded in that??

McNabb then took a shot at both Mike Shanahan and the other quarterbacks who have played for them, saying that Shanahan hasn?t had success with a quarterback since John Elway in the 1990s.

?We talk so much about Mike Shanahan and the things he was able to do in Denver,? McNabb said. ?Well, I have a couple of names for you that Mike Shanahan ? quarterbacks he?s coached ? and the lack of success that he?s had.?

At that point, McNabb ran down the last decade of quarterbacks Shanahan has coached (although McNabb curiously excluded himself from the list) and proceeded to suggest that the win-loss record proves Shanahan had failed with all of them.

?We had John Beck, who was 0-4,? McNabb said. ?Rex Grossman: 6-11. Jay Cutler, who was his prize possession: 17-20. Jake Plummer, a guy who had success, led them to the AFC Championship against Pittsburgh, as we know, and then benched him the next year, because he wouldn?t do what he wanted him to do. Brian Griese, who was supposed to be the heir apparent to John Elway, hasn?t had a lot of success.?

McNabb then suggested that if Shanahan can?t make the offense work with Griffin, Shanahan could be fired at the end of the season.

?I don?t think it?s a good fit,? McNabb said. ?If this doesn?t work this year, if we don?t see a splash like a Cam Newton splash, this could be it. . . . How long does he have with RG3? The seat is hot right now.?

McNabb compared his own talents to Griffin?s talents, and McNabb indicated that Shanahan doesn?t know how to use a quarterback with those talents.

?I was misused,? McNabb said. ?Absolutely, I was misused.?

And McNabb thinks Griffin will be misused, too.

Lehigh football team is set to spring forward

Andy Coen said that the last two years his Lehigh University football team had begun its spring practice schedule in snow.

There was no snow on Friday when the Mountain Hawks hit the field for the first of 15 practices that will culminate with the Brown and White game on the morning of April 21.

But adjusting to Friday's summer-like weather wasn't the only thing that was different for the two-time defending Patriot League champions.

"There's a lot of newness with this group and yet with that newness the expectations don't change," Coen said. "What I liked about last year's team is that coming off the 2010 season they wanted to raise the bar even higher. Fortunately, we were able to do that and now the challenge to these guys is to raise the bar yet again."

The newness extends beyond the players.

Earlier this week Coen announced that defensive line coach Donnie Roberts and secondary coach Gerard Wilcher would share the defensive coordinator position, a staff spot left vacant by the recent departure of Dave Kotulski to Stanford.

"You always try to have a plan in your mind, especially when you start winning games, because you know you might start turning the staff over," Coen said. "I've always had a plan in mind if we had to replace Dave. I didn't want to deviate from our scheme. I love our scheme. If we had hired a veteran 3-4 formation guy, he might have wanted to come in here and put his own spin on it.

"I liked what we were doing and with all of the new faces we're going to have on defense, I just thought it was best to keep as much continuity as we could on the staff. We have great leadership on this staff. I have tremendous confidence in both Donnie and Gerard and a lot of people are going with the co-coordinator model. It was an easy decision."

Wilcher, who was on the Lehigh staff even before Coen replaced Pete Lembo, previously had been Lehigh's defensive coordinator back in 2005.

"It's old, but it's also new," Wilcher said. "It's exciting. The great thing is we still have talented kids. As Andy always says 'tradition never graduates.' You just plug them in during the spring and get them going from there."

Wilcher said the disagreements between him and Roberts, the former head coach at Central Catholic, will be kept to a minimum.

"Oh, we fight only about once or twice a day," Wilcher kidded. "Actually, we get along real well. It's going to be enjoyable. Being a co-coordinator could be a problem if you don't know the guy really well, but we're good friends and we'll be able to hammer out our differences. We'll be fine."

Besides the new areas of responsibility for Roberts and Wilcher, Lehigh welcomes Matt Sanders back to the staff as the inside linebackers coach. Sanders had been on the staff as recently as 2009, but spent the last two seasons working outside of football.

"Matt got married and was living in Chicago, but I'd still here from him every week," Coen said. "He felt he needed to get back into coaching and this created a great opportunity for him. A lot of kids on the team remember him. He's a great fit here as a recruiter, a coach, all the things I really value."

With the coaching staff now solidified, Lehigh can go to work on shoring up areas of concern within the squad.

"We need to look for depth in our linebacking corps," Coen said. "We're graduating four guys who started. We're going to look for young guys to step up there and we're going to have a tremendous opportunity for our offensive linemen. We have three returning starters on the O-line, but all three are coming off surgery and won't be participating in the spring. So, there will be a lot of newness there and young kids will get reps."

Still, the position drawing the most scrutiny will be quarterback where Chris Lum put up some of the best numbers in Lehigh history over the past two seasons.

"Mike Colvin is the No. 1 guy right now, but he still has to go out and earn it," Coen said. "The other quarterbacks have done a nice job and we'll take a look at Brandon Bialkowski and Gerard Poutier. We'll have some competition. We really want to do a better job in the red zone this year."

Coen said the whole objective this spring will be to set a tone that fights complacency.

"We're graduating a lot of really good players, but the expectations for the new guys will be the same as they were for the guys they're replacing," Coen said. "We're all ready to get on the field and get to work. The weather's great and we've been in the office a little too much."

Papermill is the first beautiful, simple Instapaper client for Android (hands-on)

Even as Readability and Read it Later have released and improved their apps for Android devices, Instapaper developer Marco Arment has firmly and repeatedly said that he has no real interest in building an app for the platform. However, in December he issued a challenge to developers: the first good third-party Instapaper app for Android would become the de facto ?Instapaper for Android? application, with his blessing and promotion.

There are already plenty of third-party Instapaper apps for Android ? EverPaper, InstaFetch, and Hard Copy, to name just a few ? but most are unattractive or work poorly, and almost all scrape Instapaper?s content, trying to circumvent the app ?

THE CHANGING FACE OF ADOPTION | Harmony Adoptions

Pam Wolf

Pam Wolf, Founder and CEO of Harmony Adoptions

The face of adoption has changed. The kids are older, the impact of abuse and neglect is more severe, and the scars left behind by emotional and physical traumas are deeper than ever before.

For kids, adoption begins a journey of healing. Adoption provides a forever family, a safe and loving place for children to face their demons and slay their dragons. But all too often, the adoptive family has very little understanding of the child?s history of abuse and how this impacts their family. Many families are not fully prepared to provide the complex care the child needs. The family?s road to health and well-being is riddled with challenges, and each year hundreds of families across the state turn to Harmony for the professional treatment they so desperately need.

Harmony Adoptions has redefined what treatment, support, and education mean to adoptive families. Our post-adoption services program is nationally-recognized, evidence-based, and the most comprehensive in the country. Less than 1% of the children we work with go back into foster care ? compared to a national rate of 10% or higher. What we do at Harmony works, and it makes a difference to the children, the family, and the long-term health of all of us in Tennessee.

And yet, there is still so much more we can do. Each year, far too many kids came back into foster care because their adoptive families gave up on them. These are kids we were not able to serve. Last year in Tennessee, over 700 youth aged out of care with no plans, no family, no future. Almost one third of the homeless people in our state report spending time in foster care, and 25% of Tennessee?s prisoners were formerly in foster care.

Each year, hundreds of children begin their adoption journey, leaving foster care for their forever family, and each year hundreds of Tennessee?s precious children are left behind, waiting for a family to call their own. As the needs of Tennessee?s children continue to grow, Harmony must respond to meet these needs.

Harmony?s next chapter is dawning at the base of the Smoky Mountains. Here in a rustic woodland setting lies the property once known as Camp Montvale and the ideal location for Harmony?s expansion. The 364-acre property includes cabins, a dining hall, kitchen, barns, ropes course, and facilities for outdoor learning. It is here that Harmony plans to establish a one-of-a-kind treatment center where children and their families can work together to learn, grow, and face their challenges ? all with the help of our highly trained clinical staff. This residential adoptive family treatment program expands the number of families we can serve AND keeps families together rather than sending the child alone to treatment. Once the Harmony Family Center is fully developed, it will be self-sustaining, building on our existing funding and public utilization of the property.

Over the next year all of us at Harmony will share this amazing journey with you through the words of our children, parents, staff, and donors. You will learn more about Montvale ? the difference this one-of-a-kind property can make in the lives of our families ? and how you can participate and support our efforts. We hope you will share your thoughts and ideas with us and find ways to join us on this amazing journey!

Neutrinos slower than light, but continue to befuddle physicists

A recent experiment has demonstrated that neutrinos do not, in fact, travel faster than light. But this ethereal subatomic particle continues to undermine established physical models in other ways.?

When scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) last year apparently measured neutrinos traveling faster than light,?physicists?were largely skeptical. Their?skepticism now seems justified, as another recent CERN experiment has contradicted the measurements.

Ever since Einstein published the special theory of relativity in 1905, an immutable speed of light has been an integral part of the framework of theoretical physics. Scientists ? including the team that measured the superluminal neutrinos ? were never willing to discard Einstein's crucial idea after just one experimental result.

During the past several months, physicists have been prodding at the experimental and theoretical bases of the contentious Oscillation Project with Emulsion-Racking Apparatus (OPERA)?measurements, which beamed neutrinos from the CERN lab in Geneva, Switzerland to a lab in Gran Sasso, Italy.?In late February, many suspected that a poorly calibrated atomic clock, or even a recalcitrant fiber-optic cable produced an error in the timing. Earlier, in September, physicists Andy Cohen and Sheldon Glashow of Boston University published their letter on arXive that proved the measurements to be theoretically impossible.

The most recent CERN measurements are perhaps the best refutation yet. Using the underground ICARUS detector at Gran Sasso, the experiment replicated the OPERA design, with additional provisions taken to improve the accuracy of the timing measurements. The results maintained that neutrinos travel slower than the universal speed limit.

The 2011 OPERA experiment marked a peculiar moment of fame for the tiny neutrino. The measurements' possible, though very unlikely, contradiction of Einstein's special relativity dramatically overshadowed the enormous problems neutrinos had already been presenting for decades. Physicists would have been loath to make a theoretical exception, even for the ethereal neutrino. But the truth is they already have.

?Ask a physicist to define a neutrino, and she'll probably take a deep breath. Describing a neutrino as ghost-like (or ethereal) is convenient, but is also superficial. The theoretical inception of the particle was an oblique and complicated affair. In 1931 Wolfgang Pauli observed that energy was not conserved in certain radioactive decays, and hypothesized an undetectable particle that made off with the missing energy. The Italian physicist Enrico Fermi later dubbed this particle the neutrino, Italian for "little neutral one."

Physicists have since established some basic facts about neutrinos. They are chargeless, fundamental particles that interact through only two of the four physical forces ? the weak force and gravity. But they do so rarely. This cannot be overstated. Interaction length in particle physics is the average distance a particle will travel through a given medium before it interacts with another particle. For instance, an electron?s interaction length is measured in centimeters of air. A neutrino?s is measured in light-years of lead (a single light-year is roughly 6 trillion miles.)

Heart tests for Spurs squad after Muamba collapse

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:14 a.m. ET March 19, 2012

LONDON (AP) -A cardiologist says he will test the Tottenham squad for potential heart defects on Monday at the request of the players who saw Bolton's Fabrice Muamba suffer a cardiac arrest and collapse in their FA Cup match.

Muamba is still fighting for his life in intensive care in a critical condition after falling suddenly during Saturday's abandoned FA Cup match at White Hart Lane.

The 23-year-old midfielder's heart only started beating on its own again when he arrived at a London hospital on Saturday night and the cause of his cardiac arrest remains publicly unknown.

"These cardiac arrests in young people are very rare, they affect about one in 50,000 people," Sports cardiologist Sanjay Sharma told Sky News television. "These conditions are exceptionally rare."

Sharma said he was already due to test "one or two players" at Tottenham on Monday, but added that now "the players have all demanded cardiac screening today."

"That involves taking a history relating to cardiac symptoms, which include chest pain during exertion or breath which is disproportionate to the amount of exercise being performed and blackouts, (and) asking about a family history because many of these conditions that can cause cardiac arrest are hereditary," he said.

"We then perform a cardiac examination and following that we do an ECG (electrocardiogram) which is an electrical tracing of the heart which looks for electric faults of the heart and a cardiac ultrasound which looks at heart muscle problems or problems with the heart values."

Meanwhile, Muamba's fiancee has been issuing pleas on Twitter for the health of the father of their son Joshua.

"Fabrice WILL!! Pull through because God is good," Muamba's fiancee, who goes by the name Shauna Muamba, tweeted on Monday. "Love u so much fmuamba keep strong we're praying for u honey ... where there is life there is hope."

All constructions, whether residential or commercial, require a great air program. Apart from offering a regular stream of air to breathe, an air method also provides comfort by means of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning. These three systems are collectively referred to as HVAC.

You possibly have noticed about ?H-V-A-C? or ?H-VAK? from some contractors. HVAC is any technique that offers with ventilation and air conditioning by way of the use of air ducts. These ducts enable the air to circulate throughout the framework. HVAC may not always be composed of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning all with each other. In some situations, only the air conditioning device or the furnace device is present in an HVAC.

In locations of larger permission, it is frequent for structures and households to have a furnace driven by normal gas or heating oil. Air conditioning driven by electrical energy is deemed unnecessary as it is not needed the whole 12 months. The very same theory applies to properties in tropical areas. These structures want cooling models a lot more than furnaces.

HVAC Indianapolis contractors set up serves several functions in properties and properties. Individuals 3 features boil down to the standard objective of making use of an HVAC: to regulate temperature, humidity, and air circulation within tolerable amounts. Heating is essential in sustaining place temperature throughout chilly climate circumstances. Neighborhood heaters are far more frequently employed than central heating since they are far more affordable.

Air flow is necessary to get rid of carbon dioxide from a building. It also offers a nutritious supply of oxygen to a constructing. As an integral part of HVAC Indianapolis contractors install, ventilation eliminates stagnant air which could lead to airborne conditions. Ventilation is employed in attics to inhibit the development of bacteria and molds due to higher humidity. Air conditioning, on the other hand, is utilised to regulate the temperature inside of a room or developing.

There are two standard methods of heating and cooling Indianapolis HVACs give namely radiant and pressured air system. Radiant system entails working hot or cold h2o via pipes all around the composition. This method relies on the theory of warmth transfer. Running scorching drinking water around the space makes it warmer. Jogging chilly drinking water absorbs heat from the space. On the other hand, forced air program requires the use of fans to force air via the duct system exactly where it is conditioned by an air handler or coil on a furnace ahead of being returned into the room. Pressured air techniques are fueled by both gasoline or electricity.

How health care law affects lives of 7 Americans

CHICAGO (AP) ? A father lost his job at a medical device company that is facing a new tax. A young woman got back on her parents' insurance and was able to get surgery for an injury that could have hobbled her. A part-time sales woman stopped putting off a colonoscopy and cancer screenings and saved nearly $3,000 because health plans now must pay for preventive care without co-pays. A business owner received a tax rebate for providing health coverage to her employees.

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, The Associated Press spoke with a variety of people to hear their experiences so far with the landmark legislation, whose major provisions don't take effect until 2014. Reporters asked: How has the health care law affected your life?

Here are snapshots of seven Americans:

___

Name: Michael Esch

Home: Warwick, N.Y.

Age: 48

Occupation: Former middle manager for medical device company, now working as a hospital purchasing agent.

Insurance coverage: Paying out of his own pocket for COBRA insurance through his former company.

Esch, a father of three, lost his job in November in a layoff his employer said resulted from President Barack Obama's health care law. Medical device maker Stryker Corp. announced in November it intended to lay off 1,000 workers worldwide to save money ahead of a 2.3 percent tax on medical devices that starts in 2013.

The tax on medical devices is meant to help pay for expanding health coverage to uninsured Americans. The Obama administration argues device companies will gain in the long run as more patients become eligible to receive their products because they have insurance.

Esch was a middle manager who had worked for Stryker for six years. He helped develop a product known as the Triathlon Knee. Since the layoff, he's taken a salary cut to work as a hospital purchasing agent. He's still looking for a job with another medical device company.

He blames the medical device tax for the loss of his job, but he's grateful for the provision in the health care law that will allow his oldest child, now a college sophomore, to stay on his health insurance to age 26.

"We tend to forget that for every great idea there is a ripple effect through other sectors of a business," Esch said.

Economists say most companies should be able to pass on the bulk of the tax to customers, but the industry says it will squeeze profits and chill investment, hiring and innovation.

___

Name: Glenn Nishimura

Home: Little Rock, Ark.

Age: 62

Occupation: Consultant to nonprofit groups.

Insurance coverage: Uninsured since COBRA coverage from a previous job expired in May of 2009.

Nishimura has been uninsured for nearly three years. He lost his health coverage after he left a full-time position with benefits in 2007, thinking he could land another good job. The recession destroyed that plan.

He's been denied coverage because of high blood pressure and high blood-sugar levels. A provision in the national health care law gave his state $46 million to insure people like him who've been denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

But Nishimura said he can't afford the coverage. It would cost him about $6,300 a year in premiums with a $1,000 deductible, meaning he would pay the first $1,000 out of his own pocket before coverage kicks in.

He worries about suffering injuries in a car accident or falling ill before he's eligible for Medicare at age 65.

"I don't like feeling vulnerable like this," Nishimura said. "I'm completely vulnerable to some catastrophic problem."

Nationally, about 50,000 people with pre-existing conditions have signed up for the coverage available through the health care law, fewer than expected. The government has offered new options to encourage more to enroll. In another two years, he may be eligible for subsidies under the law for insurance.

___

Name: Samantha Ames

Home: Washington, D.C.

Age: 25

Occupation: Law student

Insurance coverage: Got back on parents' insurance, thanks to the health care law.

As a teenager, Ames was prone to ankle injuries playing catcher on baseball and softball teams. Last April, she tripped over her mini bulldog and badly injured her left ankle. Ultimately she needed surgery that cost her insurer $30,000.

But she considers herself lucky.

Only a few months before her accident, Ames had been able to get back on her parents' insurance, thanks to a provision of the health care law that lets young adults keep that coverage until they turn 26. Nationally an estimated 2.5 million young people have gotten insurance as a result.

Ames says it's unclear if the student health insurance she had been relying on previously would have covered her surgery. In any case, the copayments would have been steep. She would have had to postpone the operation, risking another ? potentially crippling ? injury.

"The fact that I was able to get on their plan is the reason I can walk today," said Ames. "Very rarely have I had something political affect me this personally."

___

Name: Sharon Whalen

Home: Springfield, Ill.

Age: 59

Occupation: Publisher of a weekly alternative newspaper

Insurance coverage: Small group plan.

As a co-owner of the Illinois Times, a weekly newspaper, Whalen wants to keep her small staff healthy. So she and her business partner provide them with health insurance and pay half the cost of premiums for their 10 employees.

Keeping that employee benefit is getting more and more expensive. The company saw a spike in premium costs after one employee's child had chronic health problems.

With costs climbing, the company switched to a managed care plan with higher copays for some services in 2009. Whalen's company also contributes less than it once did to cover the premiums of employees' family members.

The health care law brought some relief: a tax credit for small businesses that provide health coverage. The Illinois Times qualified and received a $2,700 tax credit last year.

"We see ourselves putting that money right back into the company," Whalen said.

Whalen heard about the tax credit from a health care advocacy group, not from her accountant.

"I had to practically beg them to look at this," Whalen said. "They weren't familiar with it."

The Obama administration has proposed expanding the number of businesses eligible for the credit, and simplifying the paperwork.

___

Name: Melissa Pearson

Home: Prineville, Ore.

Age: 53

Occupation: Retail sales, part time.

Insurance coverage: High-deductible plan purchased on individual market.

A few years ago, Pearson's doctor ordered her to have a routine colonoscopy. It's one of several colon cancer screening methods highly recommended for adults ages 50 to 75.

Pearson kept putting it off, in part because of the cost. Her high-deductible health insurance plan requires her to pay the first $5,600 out of her pocket each year. She knew the colonoscopy would be expensive and figured she'd be paying.

Then she learned that a provision in the health care law requires health plans to cover all costs for preventive care including colon cancer screening ? with no out-of-pocket costs to the patient.

"That's what made me make the appointment," she said. She also scheduled a mammogram and cervical cancer screening, which also are covered preventive services under the law. In all, she saved nearly $3,000 in out-of-pocket costs last year because of the Affordable Care Act.

"I said to my sister, 'Thank you Obamacare," Pearson said.

The Obama administration says the Affordable Care Act provided about 54 million Americans with at least one new free preventive service last year through their private health insurance plans.

But Pearson is worried that covering preventive services will mean her insurance premiums and her taxes will go up. "It's being paid for by somebody," she reasoned. She recently talked with a student from Norway who told her about the tax levels in that country. "I'm fearful our world will turn into that."

___

Name: David Zoltan

Home: Chicago

Age: 34

Occupation: Field marketing coordinator for a public relations firm.

Insurance coverage: Federally funded health plan for people with pre-existing conditions.

Zoltan lost a job and his health insurance during the recession. His diabetes sent him to the emergency room three times when he ran out of insulin during the two years he was uninsured.

In 2010, he was one of the first to sign up in Illinois for a new health insurance program for people with pre-existing conditions. The Affordable Care Act set aside $196 million for the state of Illinois to start the program.

Zoltan now pays about $1,848 a year for that coverage. The plan has a $2,000 deductible, meaning Zoltan also pays that amount out of pocket before the coverage starts.

Zoltan has found work, but his new job doesn't include health benefits, so he'll stay on the federally funded health plan.

"As a diabetic, I never again want to be without health insurance," Zoltan said. "Anything is better than not having coverage at all."

He is watching the Supreme Court as it considers the law. The requirement that Americans buy health insurance is under constitutional scrutiny. Zoltan believes the individual mandate is needed to spread the risk among the well and the sick, and keep insurance affordable.

___

Name: Carol McKenna

Home: Pembroke Pines, Fla.

Age: 70

Occupation: Retired.

Insurance coverage: Medicare Advantage plan.

McKenna and her husband Morty have noticed that Medicare's "doughnut hole" is shrinking. The coverage gap in Medicare's prescription drug program ? dubbed the "doughnut hole" ? caught Morty in December last year. But once there, he received a 50 percent discount on brand-name drugs and other discounts on generic drugs thanks to Obama's health care law.

Last year, he received a $250 rebate check provided by the new law for people in the doughnut hole. Under the health care law, the gap will be gradually phased out by 2020.

Warnings about possible cuts to Medicare Advantage plans caused by the health care law haven't come true, Carol McKenna said. Their health plan still includes extra benefits such as fitness center membership.

She said she's grown weary of the political debate over the health care law.

"I've been following it somewhat. Then it got so convoluted and out of control during the elections that I stopped paying attention," McKenna said. "I don't want to hear it anymore. All they're doing is sniping at each other."
