Liberty Reserve's website cited anti-money laundering policy

By Matthew Goldstein

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Older versions of the website for Liberty Reserve, a company U.S. authorities claim was a money transfer hub for criminal gangs trafficking in drugs and child pornography, expressly said the firm "will not do business with anyone suspected of, or directly involved in money laundering."

U.S. prosecutors in an indictment unsealed on Tuesday said that is precisely what the Costa Rican-based Liberty Reserve was doing.

The website for Liberty Reserve has now been seized by the United States Global Illicit Financial Team and prominently displays logos for the Department of Justice, the Department of Treasury and the Secret Service.

But older versions of the firm's website, which can be found in the Internet Archive's Wayback machine (http://archive.org/web/web.php) offer a glimpse into Liberty Reserve's past, before most people had ever heard of it.

The versions say Liberty Reserve has the "right to refuse a transaction at any time should suspicion arise that it may be connected to money laundering or criminal activity." The policy also said the company would not do business with anyone using funds from "sources by an illegal activity."

The website provided instructions on how users of Liberty Reserve could go to a number of "exchangers," which the firm said, "will be happy to buy or sell your LR."

LR is how Liberty Reserve referred to its own form of digital currency that authorities say was used to enable criminals to launder money from illegal activities like selling drugs and child porn. The digital currency could be exchanged into cash.

The company also boasted of a product called "LibertyGuard", which it said was a plug-in on Firefox browsers that would ensure users' transactions were secure.

In connection with the indictment, authorities in Spain, Costa Rica and New York said they had arrested five people on Friday and seized bank accounts and Internet domains associated with the company, Liberty Reserve.

Costa Rican prosecutor Jos? Pablo Gonz?lez said Liberty Reserve and related businesses were used to launder funds from child pornography websites and from drug trafficking.

Over the past decade, digital currency has become more popular. The most widely known is called Bitcoin. Liberty Reserve's currency was not connected to Bitcoin.

Mount Everest is Too Crowded

The world's highest peak is so crowded with climbers that some are seriously considering installing a ladder on the famed Hillary Step to ease congestion. While the ladder is intended for use for those descending from the peak, the proposal still casts Mt. Everest's long-running overcrowding issue into stark relief.?

RELATED: Three Climbers Die on Mount Everest

Here's the Guardian, on the ladder proposal:?

"Most of the traffic jams are at the Hillary Step because only one person can go up or down. If you have people waiting two, three or even four hours that means lots of exposure [to risk]. To make the climbing easier, that would be wrong. But this is a safety feature," said Sherpa, who co-ordinates the work to prepare the traditional route up the mountain for clients who pay between $45,000 and $75,000."

The story of Everest's epic traffic jam has been bubbling under the surface for awhile. National Geographic, for instance, has a great piece on Everest crowds in their June issue, marking the 60th anniversary of Edmund Hillary's ascent to the peak. Apparently, the path to ascent is now littered with garbage, and corpses:?

"We were forced to move at exactly the same speed as everyone else, regardless of strength or ability. In the swirling darkness before midnight, I gazed up at the string of lights, climbers? headlamps, rising into the black sky. Above me were more than a hundred slow-moving climbers. In one rocky section at least 20 people were attached to a single ratty rope anchored by a single badly bent picket pounded into the ice. If the picket popped, the rope or carabiner would instantly snap from the weight of two dozen falling climbers, and they would all cartwheel down the face to their death.

Panuru, the lead Sherpa of our team, and I unclipped from the lines, swerved out into open ice, and began soloing?for experienced mountaineers, a safer option. Twenty minutes later, another corpse. Still attached to the line of ropes, he was sitting in the snow, frozen solid as stone, his face black, his eyes wide open."

The magazine proposes several other options for fixing Everest's crowd problem, none of which involve a ladder. Their solutions include fewer permits, certifying climbers for experience, reducing team size, and making sure litter (and bodies) are removed from the mountain.?

Remember Me Hands-On With The Custom Combo Creator ...

By Matt Hawkins . May 27, 2013 . 5:11pm

Remember Me Hands On With The Custom Combo Creator

Remember Me is an upcoming Capcom release that will combine platforming, exploration, stealth, plus lots of punching and kicking. Sounds like countless other games out there, right? Right.

?

But it?s all in the details, as the saying goes. And it would appear that the first game to hail from Paris based Dontnod Entertainment, a new studio formed by individuals who worked on Rainbow 6, Splinter Cell, and Heavy Rain, is culmination of those aforementioned titles, of all the lessons learned, with a heavy sci-fi sheen laid on top.

?

What?s Remember Me all about? Well,it is the year 2084 (one hundred years removed from 1984, which is no coincidence, I was told by a Capcom rep) and memories appears to be as precious as gold, perhaps more so. So much so that there are individuals who are dedicated to the art of stealing and altering memories.

?

Remember Me Hands On With The Custom Combo Creator?

You play as one such person, Nilin, a former agent employed by MEMORIZE, the Big Brother of Remember Me. The demo I was able to test drive kicked off not long after the game?s beginning, where she awakens in the slums of Paris, where memories junkies fight over scraps of pleasant thoughts (I think).

?

Nilin, quite appropriately enough, has had her memory wiped out, but thankfully you have some mysterious fellow passing along instructions, to help get one started. After learning the basics of combat, the demo required me to follow one of the underground denizens across town.

?

On a purely surface level, Remember Me was visually pleasing, despite the fact that the parts I traversed were designed to be ugly. Its rendition of Paris was that of a city that was once the cradle of art and culture, now ravaged by technology and politics. One that was also quite dark and confusing, hence they liberal use directions to help Nilin on the right track. It?s clear that Dontnod Entertainment loves type, with the aforementioned instructions presented in big and bold blocks of text, bathed in white and orange. Remember Me is quite future stylish, albeit not in the most original of ways.

?

Though dark corners and sans-serif fonts aside, the heart of the game is running around and climbing, which feels a lot like Uncharted, as well as melee combat, which is reminiscent of quite a few other games on the market today, pretty much insert any name you can think of here, except with one significant twist: customization. This is achieved via the Combo Lab.

?

Remember Me Hands On With The Custom Combo Creator?

Like many similar games, you learn new moves as you play, but Remember Me allows you to create you own combos, called Pressens, by collecting the building blocks, called Procedural Mastering Power. The basic concept is that Nilin already knows these moves, and you?re simply unlocking them as you go along. Makes sense. There are different types of Pressens, and the most intriguing thing is how the elements can be combined. For example, a Power Pressen is a combo that combines various different movies and ends with a flashy finish. You also have a Regen Pressen, which doesn?t do much damage, but have regenerative qualities, if completed successfully.

?

With some tinkering around in the Combo Lab, I was able to create a string that both dished a significant amount of damage and also gave myself a little health. Though, not surprisingly, the button combination that brings everything together was hard to pull off; the combat is heavily reliant upon timing and not just pure button mashing. I was only able to pull of this super mega awesome combo 2 out of the 10 times.

?

The idea of a completely customized combo sounds great, and it?s even better once one has been finally crafted. But the middle part is where I had problems with Remember Me. It?s a bit ironic how a game that places such importance on customization plus sexy, clear graphic design, is not able to get the two ideals talking.

?

The Combo Lab was somewhat of a chore to create combos, and I needed to be walked through the process quite heavily by the rep. There is a genuine fear that many casual players will become frustrated by the process of creating something truly unique and simply follow the onscreen prompts to create something basic. Then again, perhaps hardcore players will have no problem in the end, and maybe regular folk as well, after enough time has been spent learning the nuances of the interface. Admittedly, my time with Remember Me was quite fleeting.

?

Remember Me comes out soon, very soon. June 4 in North America to be exact.

Apple CEO sees more 'gamechangers'; hints at wearable devices

By Alexei Oreskovic and Poornima Gupta

RANCHOS PALOS VERDES, Calif./SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook defended the company's record of innovation under his stewardship, saying he expected it would release "several more game changers" and hinting that wearable computers could be among them.

"It's an area where it's ripe for exploration," Cook said on Tuesday at the All Things Digital conference, an annual gathering of technology and media executives in the California coastal resort town of Rancho Palos Verdes.

"It's ripe for us all getting excited about. I think there will be tons of companies playing in this."

His remarks come at a time when worries are mounting that the company which created the smartphone and tablet markets is ceding ground to competitors such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Google Inc, with a slowdown in earnings growth hitting its share price.

Cook stopped short of clarifying if Apple was working on wearable products amid speculation that it is developing a smartwatch, saying only that wearable computers had to be compelling.

He added that Google's Glass -- a cross between a mobile computer and eyeglasses that can both record video and access the Internet -- is likely to have only limited appeal.

"There's nothing that's going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch to wear one, or at least I haven't seen it," he said in the near one-and-a-half-hour question and answer session.

"So I think there's lots of things to solve in this space."

Cook also said he has a "grand vision" for television that goes beyond an existing $99 Apple TV streaming device, but did not go into details. The company has maintained for years that it harbors an interest in doing more in the TV arena.

Apple is not averse to doing a large acquisition if the acquired company could help Apple develop an important product, he said, noting it has done nine acquisitions in the current fiscal year, versus the company's historical average of about six deals a year.

Cook also hinted at updates to the company's iOS mobile software, saying the future of iOS would be evident when it holds its annual developer conference next month, and said the company was investing heavily in online services such as its mapping application.

Its Apple maps service that replaced a Google Maps app last September contained embarrassing errors, drawing fierce criticism from consumers and reviewers and forcing Cook to offer a public apology.

When asked if Apple has lost its cool, Cook said "absolutely not" and went on to list statistics of device sales and usage. He, however, acknowledged that he was frustrated with the sudden downturn in the firm's stock price.

Since hitting a record close of $702.10 last September, the world's largest technology company has shed 44 percent, losing more than $280 billion of market value - or more than the entire market capitalization of Google.

In April, Apple reported its first quarterly profit decline in over a decade and was also shunned by some well-known fund managers in the first quarter, with John Griffin's Blue Ridge Capital selling off its shares and Chase Coleman's Tiger Global Management sharply cutting their position.

Cook has tried to reset heightened expectations around the company and he has stressed that the company's position remains strong, noting it has opened up more of its treasure trove to investors, doubling its cash return program to $100 billion by the end of 2015.

Cook, who said that Apple's large size means it gets more scrutiny from governments and regulators, announced that the company has hired Lisa Jackson, who served as the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 2009 to 2013.

Jackson will be reporting directly to Cook and overseeing Apple's environmental issues, he said.

The sense that Apple has lost some of its luster was evidenced when one member of the audience criticized the company for its apparent lack of exciting new technologies and compared Cook to Gil Amelio, a former Apple CEO who presided over a low point in Apple's history during the mid-1990s.

"We believe very much in the element of surprise," Cook responded. "We think customers love surprises."

How To Make Money Online Using Internet Marketing Programs ...

Starting a program in online marketing can prove to be quite complicated, but it can be easier than you expect. Technological innovations can help you create that network of referrals, without great time or expense. The following article will help you begin an effective internet marketing program and offer tips and advice for success.

Use the following affiliate marketing techniques to help you make money sites for passive income.

Make sure you understand how order tracking works with the affiliates that you have chosen. Some companies allow orders to be made my mail or phone. Those orders are only connected to an affiliate ID if actively mentioned. In these scenarios, you could miss out on commissions.

Be upfront about your use of web marketing, and observe the impact it has on the behavior of your audience. Be up front and honest with your customers, as they will respect you more for it. Your site visitors will respond well if they understand the service you are providing: you are giving them good connections to pursue something they desire. Understanding this will make them want to use your links.

Try out secret link systems. You can use techniques to infiltrate the text with affiliate links without being obvious about it. Use these thechniques, but never try to trick your readers. You can keep readers from being unhappily surprised by providing a clear context for each link.

If your website is sports-related, you already know what your visitors are going to be interested in. Sports-related websites would be the most beneficial places to which you should link. Your customers will most likely look at a link relevant to the info you have on your website.

If you have a sports related website, make sure the content is also sports related, as this is what your viewers are going to be expecting to see. Putting a link leading to a completely unrelated affiliate won?t be nearly as effective as a link to something related to sports. Having link that are relevant to your target audience is always more effective.

In order to make sure the money gets where it needs to be, you need to consider affiliate companies that provide different payment options. Some programs offer different payment options such as PayPal and AlertPay. Others only mail a check when sales reach a given amount.

Maximize business profits by signing up with online marketing companies. Affiliate promotion is one of the most popular ways of advertising, because of the number of people who click links. You should look for some things in an affiliate program such as type of payments received, ease of site navigation, and it?s popularity.

Limit your business dealings to affiliate companies that are fair and generous. You should not partner with a company who is offering a commission that is less than 20% for items sold. Affiliate companies that treat their workers fairly know that good commissions attract quality workers and more business.

Use your marketing articles to entice the audience that will be interested in the products sold by your affiliate partners. You can get away with using indirect high-volume methods with low click-through rates for inexpensive products. For instance, selecting a rather expensive product will require you to focus on convincing customers more than working with volumes.

You need to be quite aware of who your target audience is in online marketing. It is necessary to keep striving to satisfy the expectations of your targeted groups. Research what draws them to your site. Which products, articles or other content are they viewing?

If you utilize banner ads, make one that has a trivia question which can only be answered by visiting your site. It will be hard for many people to resist. If someone answers correctly, give them a freebie.

Affiliate marketing is a rewarding process if done right, not just for the amount of profits it generates, but also for the amount of knowledge you offer your customers. Keep in mind that for online marketing to be successful, you must invest your time in order to create provocative and stimulating material that will make you more popular than others in your field. Should you act on this, you will attain success in marketing online.

Ore. teen accused of planning to attack school

(AP) ? An Oregon teenager intended to blow up his school in a plot "forged and inspired by the model of the Columbine shootings" and he will be charged with attempted aggravated murder, a prosecutor said late Saturday.

Grant Acord, 17, will be charged as an adult and also faces six counts of manufacturing and possessing a destructive device after investigators found six bombs in a secret compartment in his bedroom, said Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson.

Acord was taken to a juvenile jail Thursday night after police received a tip that the youth was making a bomb to blow up West Albany High School, located about 75 miles south of Portland.

He said Acord had written plans, a checklists and a specific timeline for the attack. The bombs investigators found included pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails, a Drano bomb and a napalm bomb, Haroldson said.

Police found no bombs during a search of the high school.

Haroldson declined to provide the specific date Acord allegedly planned to attack the school, but said it would be included in court paperwork to be filed after the Memorial Day weekend.

"That said there were also some indications that it could happen at any time, too," Haroldson said. "So you have - A -the methodical planning and then - B - I suppose he could get really excited about it and go early."

Acord is a junior. Haroldson said he's not aware that the youth had any major problems, such as a suspension, at school.

"In any case that you have a young person that in essence plans to take a video game approach to killing people at school, you have to take a close look at the mental health issues," he said. "And the process will certainly provide for that once he's represented by counsel."

Phone listings did not appear to be available for either of the boy's parents to reach them for comment Saturday.

The district attorney said it did not appear the teen was targeting a specific person or group of people. He said Acord will likely be arraigned Tuesday in Benton County Circuit Court in Corvallis.

"I can't say enough about how lucky we are that there was an intervention," the district attorney said. "When I look at the evidence in the case, I shudder to think of what could have happened here."

Japan's PM Abe defends policies as markets settle

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's top leaders are defending the economic strategies championed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, though the central bank chief acknowledged a need for better communication with financial markets, a day after Tokyo shares suffered their worst loss since the 2011 tsunami disaster.

Bank of Japan Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda acknowledged Friday the need for careful handling of aggressive monetary policies aimed at breaking the world's third-largest economy free of deflation, or falling prices, that has hobbled growth by slowing investment and consumer spending.

"We are undertaking very flexible market operations and interest rate volatility should be curbed as much as possible," Kuroda told a regional conference in Tokyo, a day after 10-year government bond yields breached 1 percent for the first time in a year. By Friday afternoon they were at about 0.83 percent, near their recent trading level.

"Communication and dialogue with the markets should be strengthened," Kuroda said. "The markets should be stabilized through various channels as we work on the wider economy to establish a favorable growth cycle, and prices should rise gradually."

Kuroda, Abe and other officials said they will stick to the "Abenomics" program of extreme monetary stimulus, government spending and reforms aimed at reviving growth after two decades of stagnation.

The central bank is buying some 70 percent of all new Japanese government bonds as it pumps money into the economy, aiming to double the volume of cash in circulation and bank reserves and push prices higher. Kuroda launched the program in early April, saying he expected it would help keep long-term bond yields low. But as investors have shifted their portfolios out of bonds and into the booming share market, yields have actually risen, adding to worries over the eventual costs Japan will face in managing its huge public debt.

On Thursday, dismal manufacturing data from China coupled with the concerns about Abenomics triggered a sell-off in Tokyo, where the Nikkei 225 fell 7.3 percent, as investors cashed in on recent gains. Shares rebounded early Friday but by mid-afternoon were down another 2 percent.

Abe told a parliamentary session Friday that the government was keeping a close eye on the markets. But he said Japan would "firmly proceed with measures to ensure sustainable government finances and secure market confidence."

The aim is to bring about long-term improvements, said Finance Minister Taro Aso.

"Japan's credibility will increase if it can end prolonged deflation" through Abe's policies, he told reporters.

Mechanism discovered which aids Legionella to camouflage itself in the organism

Thursday, May 23, 2013

The feared Legionella pneumophila bacteria is responsible for legionellosis, an infectious disease that can lead to pneumonia. In order to infect us, this pathogen has developed a complex method enabling it to camouflage itself and go unnoticed in our cells, thus avoiding these acting against the infectious bacteria.

Research led by the Basque biosciences research centre, CIC bioGUNE, in which teams from the National Institute of Health (NIH) of the USA and the National Supercomputation Centre in Barcelona (BSC) have also participated, has described for the first time a mechanism that aids this bacteria to camouflage itself in human cells. The research, recently published in the prestigious PLOS Pathogens, resolved the structure of the SidD protein of the Legionella pneumophila, involved in the interference of cell processes during infection.

Legionella, which lives in stagnant water, gains access to our organism through the respiratory tract, when we inhale contaminated microscopic drops of water. Once there, the cells of the immune system phagocytise it (that is, they 'swallow' it up), but are not able to destroy it. This is due to the fact that the bacteria manages to manipulate the host cell to go unnoticed inside it and multiply itself without being destroyed.

The strategy of the bacteria involves releasing about 300 proteins into the cell, which in turn act on the host proteins in order to avoid being recognized as an infectious agent and thus go unnoticed during the time necessary to multiply itself.

One of these proteins, concretely the Legionella SidD protein, regulates a chemical modification involved in the process of intracellular camouflage. It is precisely the function of this protein which the research by CIC bioGUNE, the NIH and the BSC has described. Once the Legionell has managed to multiply itself, the SidD protein unblocks cellular processes which favour the advance of the infection.

New targets

"Legionella pneumophila is an organism which, during millions of years of evolution, has learnt to manipulate our proteins to its own benefit in order to thus favour the infection", explained CIC bioGUNE researcher, Aitor Hierro. "Knowing how it does this", he added, "can help us to manipulate our proteins to our own benefit".

The discovery of the mechanism enabling the bacteria to survive and develop within our cells could give rise to the discovery of new findings. According to Mr. Hierro, "this knowledge not only reveals new targets that can be used for designing inhibitors, but also shows us molecular mechanisms that can be readapted and used, for example, in the selective transport of molecules for therapeutic use".

Jawfish Games Launches Its Real-Time, Multiplayer Platform For iOS, Android

Screen Shot 2013-05-23 at 8.55.49 AMJawfish Games, a Seattle-based startup run by a former professional poker player and the engineering team that built the Fult Tilt Poker site, launched a gaming platform that can host more than 100,000 simultaneous players in real-time tournaments across iOS, Android and the web. While asynchronous, turn-based games have done well on mobile platforms and Facebook over the last five years, pure, real-time multiplayer games haven’t caught on as quickly partially because data connections haven’t been fast enough and because a game developer would need a critical mass of players to match them synchronously. But Jawfish, which has raised $3.65 million in funding from firms like Founders Fund’s angel fund, Right Side Capital and other angels, says it has built a platform to do just that. Their platform can support more than 100,000 simultaneous players and host 1 million tournaments for less than $10 in bandwidth. They initially came out with a few games in partnership with Seattle’s Big Fish Games, but now they’re bringing out more of their own titles. Because Jawfish’s CEO Phil Gordon is?a championship professional poker career who has hosted The World Series of Poker and published five books on the game, the company is doing a poker game (of course). The poker game is designed to have the look and feel of a broadcasted game with Gordon?s running commentary throughout play. They’ve also launched a basic word search game, called Jawfish Words, that lets players compete on the getting the highest scores, finding the longest words or the most diagonals. There more obscure goals too, like finding the most words with a single vowel. They launched that game last month through a partnership with Amazon. The company has pointed out some promising stats: the average player spends 21 minutes and plays 10.7 tournaments a day. Each tournament is about 60 to 90 seconds long. They plan to building out a suite of classic games, from casual to casino titles that make use of the platform. “Basically what we’re looking to do is to take games that people know and love and reinvent them for multiplayer real-time tournaments,” Gordon said. “That’s exactly what we’re going to do across a wide spectrum of games.” While Jawfish hasn’t opened its platform up to third-party developers, there are other gaming networks that add multi-player mode to indie titles that are blowing up. Impoverished Malawi sells presidential jet for $15 million

LILONGWE (Reuters) - Malawi's luxury presidential jet, bought by late leader Bingu wa Mutharika, has been sold for $15 million to raise cash for the impoverished African country, a government official said on Wednesday.

Mutharika, who left the economy on the brink of collapse after he picked a fight with donors whose support accounted for almost 40 percent of the budget, bought the jet for $22 million in 2009. He said the plane matched his status and was cheaper than flying commercially.

Britain, Malawi's main bilateral donor, criticized the purchase and reduced its aid budget to Mutharika's government by 3 million pounds ($4.5 million) because if it.

President Joyce Banda, who took office in April last year after Mutharika died of a heart attack, made the sale of the jet a priority as she sought to repair the economic damage.

Chintu Phiri, principal secretary in the office of the President and Cabinet, told Reuters that Virgin Islands company Bohnox Enterprise Ltd had beaten three other bidders for the 14-passenger Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft. "We have accepted their offer and we are waiting to hear from them," Phiri said.

The plane reportedly cost Malawi about $300,000 a year in maintenance and insurance.

Since taking office, Banda has also cut her salary by 30 percent, pledged to sell off 35 Mercedes Benz cars used by her cabinet and introduced a host of austerity measures.

Her early popularity has faded, however, due to an IMF-backed devaluation of the kwacha currency that caused inflation to spike to more than 35 percent a year.

He then added a particularly graphic, do-not-click-if-you-have-a-weak-stomach pic of his severed fingertip detached from his pinky nub, writing, "Doesn't look like this little dude's gonna make it, Nice know'n you little buddy."

And as James was "Heading 2 surgery," he posted a picture from his hospital bed. Looking none too frightened, he showed off his injury once more and managed to self-promote, writing, "#jessejames #westcoastchoppers #StillMetal."

Big thumbs up to James for keeping a positive attitude about it all.

Ministry Health Care to cut 225 jobs in Marshfield, Stevens Point

MILWAUKEE -

Ministry Health Care plans to lay off several hundred employees, citing a drop in the number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.

Ministry operates 15 hospitals and 47 clinics across Wisconsin. The facilities include Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Ministry spokesman Geoffrey Huys said about 225 to 250 employees will be cut, mainly through attrition and job eliminations. He said it's too early to say which specific positions and sites will be affected. He also declined to offer a timetable.

Huys said the move was prompted in part because of high-deductible insurance plans that have made people less likely to seek health services. He also said federal sequestration led to a $10 million cut in Medicare reimbursements.

Driver brags on Twitter about hitting cyclist

by:

Here?s a memo to drivers who hate cyclists: If you hit one, don?t Tweet about it.

That?s just what Brit Emma Way apparently did. On Sunday, she Tweeted: ?Definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier ? I have right of way he doesn?t even pay road tax #bloodycyclists.? (She has since deleted her account, but here?s a screenshot of the Tweet.)

The post quickly spread around the Internet, and caught the attention of Norwich police, who Tweeted saying she should contact authorities.

The Guardian newspaper reported that the cyclist involved turned out to be Tom Hockley, who responded to Way?s tweet by writing on her Facebook page: ?Oh hi! That was me you hit and FYI, you didn?t knock me off, I?m too hard to be hurt by a pissy micra or whatever it was you were driving.?

Way apologized in a subsequent interview with ITV.

?It was a spur-of-the-moment, stupid Tweet,? she said, adding: ?If I knew that he was hurt I would never have driven off. ? I don?t want any cyclist to think I have hatred against them, because I?m a cyclist myself.?

Way said she has been suspended from her job as a trainee solicitor. Her lawyer said police are still investigating the incident.

HBT: Angels' Trout hits for cycle against Mariners

Saving the home run for last, Mike Trout recorded his first career cycle Tuesday as the Angels crushed the Mariners 12-0.

Trout struck out in his first at-bat of the night before singling in the third, tripling in the fourth, doubling in the sixth and homering in the eighth. He ended the game with five RBI, and he also picked up his ninth steal to go along with his ninth homer.

The Los Angeles Times? Bill Shaikin pointed out that the 21-year-old Trout is the youngest player to hit for the cycle since Hall of Famer Mel Ott did so in 1929. It was also the perfect answer to Miguel Cabrera?s three-homer game Sunday in light of the subsequent revisiting of the 2012 MVP race.

After a slow start, Trout, the AL Rookie of the Year and MVP runner-up last season, is currently on pace for 32 homers and 32 steals, as well as 112 runs scored and a whopping 122 RBI. He?s hitting .343 in May to raise his overall average to .293.

Of course, as impressive as his numbers are, they?re still not a match for Cabrera?s this year. And his defense isn?t yet making up the difference, at least not according to WAR. Plus, any chance of Trout factoring into the MVP race will likely hinge on the Angels? playing much better ball from here on in. At 18-27, they have a better record than only the Astros in the American League.

Colorado farmer plants country's first legal hemp crop in decades ...

A farmer in southeastern Colorado has planted a crop that hasn?t been legally grown in the United States for 60 years ? industrial hemp.

Hemp is the much-maligned cousin of marijuana, a harmless plant that contains a negligible amount of the psychoactive THC that has made marijuana so controversial.

Under federal law, however, hemp is just as illegal as pot.

But hemp was freed from its legal bonds in Colorado when voters passed Amendment 64 in November, the measure that legalized adult recreational use of pot.

Farmer Ryan Loflin planted the first of what is expected to be several hemp crops grown throughout the state on Monday, in the farming town of Springfield. He?s growing 60 acres on land where he used to grow alfalfa, according to the Denver Post.

Hemp has scores of applications, including as cordage, in clothing, in plastics, in construction and in body care products. The annual market for hemp products is estimated to be about $500 million, according to the Hemp Industries Association, but all hemp is imported into the United States since it?s illegal under the Controlled Substances Act to grow it.

?As the hemp market grows and Canadian farmers increase their hemp acreage to meet demand, U.S. farmers? frustration at being shut out of the lucrative worldwide hemp market is catalyzing real movement throughout all levels of government to legalize industrial hemp,? said HIA director Eric Steenstra, in a statement.

Because of its semi-arid climate, Colorado is well suited to growing hemp and farmers? organizations have said interest in the crop is high, especially due to a years-long drought that has crippled many farming operations.

Eight states have passed laws defining hemp as distinct from marijuana and removing barriers to its production, but farmers still face a raid by Drug Enforcement Administration officials enforcing federal law.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers have introduced the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013 in Congress. It?s been assigned to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.

George Packer's 6 favorite books

An acclaimed New Yorker staff writer recommends works by Charles Dickens and George Orwell

Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell (Mariner, $15). The 20th century's great drama of war, ideological struggle, hope, and disillusionment, told without histrionics or self-display. The voice is both passionately humane and ruthlessly detached. I found this book in a Barcelona bookshop at age 23, a very low moment, and wanted to be a writer ? that writer.

A Bend in the River by V.S. Naipaul (Vintage, $16). Naipaul is proof that a terrible person can be a great novelist. This work is set in Mobutu Sese Seko's Zaire in the 1970s, when a lot of Western nonsense was projected onto Africa. Naipaul strips it all away and sees the truth. Every sentence is precise, beautiful, and frightening. He makes clarity mesmerizing.

U.S.A. by John Dos Passos (Library of America, $40). This trilogy of historical fiction chronicles America in the first three decades of the 20th century. Flat in tone, dazzling in construction, it used to be read alongside Fitzgerald and Hemingway, then fell out of fashion. But all the national myths, obsessions, aspirations, and fads we know today ? our American grandeur and squalor ? are presaged here.

The Age of Reform by Richard Hofstadter (Vintage, $15). Hofstadter was a highly readable scholar. He was also a sober liberal who believed in progress but didn't turn away from its underside. Here he examines the period from the Populism of the 1890s to the New Deal, when America became modern and the state learned to tame capitalism. Read this as a companion to the Dos Passos.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo (Random House, $18). Boo spent years in a Mumbai slum, watching, listening, recording, digging. Then she condensed all that research into a tale that will devastate and infuriate you. Only a few novels are as good as her journalism.

Bleak House by Charles Dickens (Bantam, $7). Dickens was sui generis, but I keep meeting his outsize, struggling characters in places like Yangon, Myanmar, and Lagos, Nigeria. Societies and literary styles have changed since the 1850s, but there's nothing dated about the moral vision.

? George Packer is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of The Assassins' Gate, an acclaimed 2005 book on the war in Iraq. His new book, The Unwinding, depicts an America weakened by a fraying social contract.?

G-7 to discuss ways to 'nurture recovery'

LONDON (AP) ? The role of central banks in shoring up the global economic recovery is set to be a key point of discussion among top financial officials from the world's seven leading economies when they gather in the UK this weekend.

The Japanese yen's continuing weakness is also expected to come under discussion now that the dollar has breached the 100 yen mark for the first time in a little over four years.

In a statement Friday ahead of the Group of Seven's two-day meeting at a country house around 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of London, British finance minister George Osborne said the main task officials face over the coming two days is how to "nurture" the recovery.

"The G-7 is an opportunity to consider what more monetary activism can do to support the recovery, while ensuring medium-term inflation expectations remained anchored," said Osborne, who will be hosting the event alongside the Bank of England's governor Mervyn King.

Osborne suggested that this "activism" may involve "targeted interventions" to support lending in weak parts of the economy. The U.K. treasury chief noted that the European Central Bank had already started consultations on how best to boost lending to small and medium-sized enterprises ? the key engines of economic growth and employment.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said the G-7 discussions should center on how to boost growth and generate jobs. He said the U.S. economy was healing but not at a fast enough pace.

"We're moving in the right direction but while growth is encouraging it's not sufficient," Lew told CNBC.

He singled out Europe as a laggard and said there was a need for policymakers there to get the right balance between austerity and growth.

"We're not arguing whether we need to get our fiscal house in order, we all need to do that, the question is when and how," Lew said.

The Treasury Secretary noted that some progress had already been made in striking that balance with the easing of some deficit-reduction deadlines among some of the 17 European Union countries that use the euro.

And in a hint that Germany should do more, Lew added that some countries have "more fiscal space" than others to boost demand. Many economists argue that Germany ? the government and its people ? should be spending more to stimulate growth across the rest of the eurozone. Europe's largest economy is running a budget surplus, albeit a fairly small one, as well as a current account surplus that is equivalent to around 6 percent of its annual gross domestic product.

In the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis that exploded following the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008, governments around the world tried to support their economies by increasing spending. But with debt levels around the world, not least in Europe, having risen to generational highs, that method of support has been scaled down and monetary policy has had to take on a bigger role.

Given that backdrop, central banks have played an increasingly active role in trying to help the global economy recover from what is widely considered to be its biggest shock since World War II.

Interest rates have been slashed ? to near zero percent in some cases ? and new money-creation policies have been introduced, notably from the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of England.

Earlier this year, the Bank of Japan escalated its attempts to get the Japanese economy out of its two-decade period of stagnation. By doubling its stimulus program, pressure has been piled on to the yen. The more there is of a currency in circulation, the more its value is affected ? as witnessed by the performance of the dollar over much of the past five years. While potentially a boon to Japan's export powerhouses, the fall in the yen inevitably creates losers ? that's not ideal for the recession-mired countries in Europe.

The fall value of the yen will form the backdrop to the G-7 discussions that are scheduled to conclude Saturday. On Friday, the dollar breached the 100 yen for the first time in a little over four years. By late morning London time, it was trading 0.6 percent higher at 101.24 yen.

So far there's been a certain amount of support for Japan's economic gamble ? even though the yen's decline potentially makes exports of other countries more expensive. However, for the countries that use the euro, many of which are in recession, less competitive exports may not be too appetizing.

While refusing to directly comment on the yen's current value, Lew said the U.S. was keeping a close watch on developments. As long as Japan doesn't directly target its exchange rate and stays "within the bounds" of international agreements, then Lew said the country needs to deal with its underlying and long-standing economic problems.

Few in the markets expect much change in the G-7's line on currencies from its last statement in February.

"Any remarks are set to remain along the lines of the well-worn mantra that markets should set exchange rates," said Jane Foley, senior currency strategist at Rabobank International.

This is not the first time the yen's weakness has been a cause for debate among the G-7. Back in February, as well as reaffirming their desire for market-determined exchange rates, the G-7 said their "fiscal and monetary policies have been and will remain oriented towards meeting our respective domestic objectives using domestic instruments, and that we will not target exchange rates."

Likes: A solid little drill with a single-sleeve chuck to speed up the changing of bits. Although it takes twice the time to drill a hole compared to our pro models, it's fast enough for homeowner purposes.

Dislikes: The spare bit holder on the handle wasn't well thought-out. A screwdriver bit placed there can give the user a nasty poke in the hand.

Samsung gets exclusive access to new Android ITV Player app until August 31st

Samsung will get exclusive access to ITV's Player app on its Android devices

While we've seen broadcasters and other content providers launch smart TV apps with only one manufacturer, ITV's decided to give Samsung rare exclusive Android access to its ITV Player. The Korean outfit announced it would get the refreshed app all to itself until August 31st, meaning Brits who use the previous, Android-agnostic ITV Player will have to forego the new version until that time. The update now includes landscape navigation support for smartphones and tablets, along with 3G/4G streaming, improved video playback and support for older versions of Android. ITV says it's offering the app exclusively to Samsung "for an initial period while we endeavor to optimize and improve the experience before releasing to other device manufacturers." Oddly enough, Samsung didn't mention that beta-testing aspect in its own PR, which is right after the break.

'Gravity' Film Trailer Reveals George Clooney, Sandra Bullock as Astronauts

Like the pull from a looming planet, the first trailer for director Alfonso Cuar?n's "Gravity," starring actors George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts, draws in moviegoers.

The one-and-a-half minute teaser, which Warner Brothers Pictures released online Thursday (May 9), provides a first glimpse at the highly-anticipated film, which has been in development since 2010. "Gravity" is scheduled to launch into theaters on Oct. 4, on the anniversary of the launch of the world's first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957.

In the film, Clooney plays Matt Kowalsky, an experienced astronaut commanding his last mission aboard the space shuttle. His crew includes first-time mission specialist Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock), a medical engineer. According to a synopsis, the two astronauts are out performing a routine spacewalk when the shuttle is destroyed and they are left stranded, with no way of communicating with Earth. [Watch: "Gravity" official teaser trailer]

The trailer opens with an astronaut's view of Earth as seen from space. "Beautiful, don't you think?" Clooney remarks from off-screen.

The seemingly-peaceful moment, now showing Clooney and Bullock in spacesuits, tethered together, floating over the limb of the planet, is quickly replaced with a torrent of violent shots, alternating between a space shuttle being torn apart, what looks to be the Hubble Space Telescope being significantly damaged and a Russian Soyuz capsule tearing through an exploding International Space Station.

The sound of an ever-increasing heart beat serves as the backdrop to the next scenes of Bullock being thrown into open space. "What do I do? What do I do!" she yells, as Clooney replies over radio, "Grab a hold. Grab anything!"

As the preview comes to an end, it is Bullock whispering "Anybody, please copy..." as she tumbles head over feet into the black void of space.

A similar theme, underlined by the tagline "Don't Let Go," appears on the movie's first official poster, also released this week. The blue and black poster depicts an astronaut flailing backwards, his (or her) tether having snapped, as he or she falls away from the space shuttle amid a cloud of space debris.

Despite it featuring NASA spacecraft and spacesuits, the film sought little assistance from the U.S. space agency. According to NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs, the agency's only involvement was to arrange a phone call between the filmmakers and astronaut Catherine "Cady" Coleman.

"Gravity" is Cuar?n's first feature film since the Academy Award-nominated science fiction drama "Children of Men" in 2006. The son of a nuclear physicist, Cuar?n has said in interviews that he always wanted to be an astronaut, as well as a director.

This is Bullock's first "trip" into space. Clooney previously strapped on a spacesuit as astronaut Chris Kelvin in the 2002 sci-fi movie "Solaris" by director Steven Soderbergh.

Warner Bros. will release "Gravity" in 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX.
