John Koster, GOP House Candidate: 'The Rape Thing' Does Not Excuse Abortions

John Koster, a Republican congressional candidate in Washington state, said Sunday that "the rape thing" is not a good enough reason for a woman to have an abortion, the Associated Press reported.

Asked at a campaign fundraiser whether he supports abortion rights in some situations, Koster replied that he only supports abortion in cases where a woman's life is in danger.

"Incest is so rare, I mean, it's so rare," he said. "But the rape thing-- you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept the child, gave it up for adoption, and she doesn't regret it."

He added, "On the rape thing, it's like, how does putting more violence onto a woman's body and taking the life of an innocent child that's a consequence of this crime -- how does that make it better? You know what I mean?"

Listen to the audio of Koster's comments:

His Democratic opponent, Suzan DelBene, supports abortion rights. Her campaign criticized Koster for trivializing rape.

"Dismissing it as a 'thing' is an awfully casual way for him to talk about it, and I think it highlights how little he understands the ramifications and the seriousness of the issue. So that's very problematic," DelBene spokesperson Viet Shelton told TPM. "And the way he approaches the issue and the policy conclusions he comes to, it just highlights the serious problem we have when politicians are trying to dictate women's health care decisions."

In response to the controversy over his comments, Koster campaign manager Larry Stickney told the AP that Koster clearly takes rape seriously because he has strongly advocated cracking down on sex offenders.

Republican lawmakers and congressional candidates have made headlines several times over the past few months for their comments about rape and abortion. Indiana GOP Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said that pregnancy from rape is "something God intended," Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) said victims of "legitimate rape" almost never become pregnant, and Rep. Tom Smith (R-Pa.) compared pregnancy as a result of rape to "having a baby out of wedlock."

Frankenoctopus unveils novel shape-shifting arms

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

It looks like a creation from Frankenstein's lab: a robot with tentacles modelled on an octopus. Complete with waterproof skin and suckers, it's the world's first entirely soft robot.

The first prototype, currently on display at the Science Museum in London, has six silicone legs designed for locomotion, while two specialised arms use artificial muscles, motors and sensors to detect and grasp objects. A spring-like structure inside these tentacles, made from a shape-memory alloy, can expand, contract or bend in any direction with changes in temperature.

Cecilia Laschi of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy, and colleagues control their robot's behaviour via a centralised unit that mimics the central nervous system of an octopus. When an object is identified, the centralised control system coordinates the locomotion legs to move towards it, then activates the grasping arms once the octobot reaches its destination. A separate control system is responsible for the shape-shifting tentacles.

Another team, led by Richard Bonser from Brunel University in Uxbridge, UK, developed the skin that protects the electronics from seawater. This outer layer is made from a knitted nylon textile, which makes it durable and flexible, combined with a waterproof coating of silicone rubber. They also developed the sensors from two layers of conductive Lycra separated by a silicone washer. "The size and shape of the hole, and the thickness of the washer, determine how easily the layers will come into contact when touching an object," says Bonser. "This essentially creates a switch."

Although the robot is being developed for search and rescue missions on the seabed, the tentacles also have medical applications. A new project is looking at how they could help surgeons during minor operations.

Dawn sees 'young' surface on giant asteroid Vesta

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Like a Hollywood starlet constantly retouching her makeup, the giant asteroid Vesta is constantly stirring its outermost layer to present a young face. Data from NASA's Dawn mission show that a form of weathering that occurs on the moon and other airless bodies we've visited in the inner solar system does not alter Vesta's outermost layer in the same way. Carbon-rich asteroids have also been splattering dark material on Vesta's surface over a long span of the body's history.

The results are described in two papers released today in the journal Nature.

"Dawn's data allow us to decipher how Vesta records fundamental processes that have also affected Earth and other solar system bodies," said Carol Raymond, Dawn deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "No object in our solar system is an island. Throughout solar system history, materials have exchanged and interacted."

Over time, soils on Earth's moon and asteroids such as Itokawa have undergone extensive weathering in the space environment. Scientists see this in the accumulation of tiny metallic particles containing iron, which dulls the fluffy outer layer. Dawn's visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR) and framing camera detected no accumulation of such tiny particles on Vesta, and this particular protoplanet, or almost-planet, remains bright and pristine.

Nevertheless, the bright rays of the youngest features on Vesta are seen to degrade rapidly and disappear into background soil. Scientists know frequent, small impacts continually mix the fluffy outer layer of broken debris. Vesta also has unusually steep topography relative to other large bodies in the inner solar system, which leads to landslides that further mix surface material.

"Getting up close and familiar with Vesta has reset our thinking about the character of the uppermost soils of airless bodies," said Carle Pieters, one of the lead authors and a Dawn team member based at Brown University, Providence, R.I. "Vesta 'dirt' is very clean, well mixed and highly mobile."

Early pictures of Vesta showed a variety of dramatic light and dark splotches on Vesta's surface. These light and dark materials were unexpected and now show the brightness range of Vesta is among the largest observed on rocky bodies in our solar system.

Dawn scientists suspected early on that bright material is native to Vesta. One of their first hypotheses for the dark material suggested it might come from the shock of high-speed impacts melting and darkening the underlying rocks or from recent volcanic activity. An analysis of data from VIR and the framing camera has revealed, however, that the distribution of dark material is widespread and occurs both in small spots and in diffuse deposits, without correlation to any particular underlying geology. The likely source of the dark material is now shown to be the carbon-rich material in meteoroids, which are also believed to have deposited hydrated minerals from other asteroids on Vesta.

To get the amount of darkening we now see on Vesta, scientists on the Dawn team estimate about 300 dark asteroids with diameters between 0.6 to 6 miles (1 and 10 kilometers) likely hit Vesta during the last 3.5 billion years. This would have been enough to wrap Vesta in a blanket of mixed material about 3 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) thick.

"This perpetual contamination of Vesta with material native to elsewhere in the solar system is a dramatic example of an apparently common process that changes many solar system objects," said Tom McCord, the other lead author and a Dawn team member based at the Bear Fight Institute, Winthrop, Wash. "Earth likely got the ingredients for life -- organics and water -- this way."

Launched in 2007, Dawn spent more than a year investigating Vesta. It departed in September 2012 and is currently on its way to the dwarf planet Ceres.

JPL manages the Dawn mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. in Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are international partners on the mission team. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA.

Deciding Which State To Incorporate A Business - Small Business ...

After you decide to incorporate your business and choose a business structure, you need to decide which state to incorporate your business in. This means that, as part of the process?of forming a legal entity for your business, you need to choose a state to incorporate?in and which to make your filing in.

Many people want to know, ?What is the best state state to incorporate?a business?? Or ?Can I save money on taxes by incorporating my business in a different state??

State To Incorporate

Even though a business can be legally based in any state, even if that state is different from the owner?s state of residence, most business owners choose to incorporate in their own home state, or Delaware or Nevada.

Delaware is a popular?state to incorporate in, especially for larger companies, because it has the most developed and flexible corporate statutes in the country and is widely considered to be a pro-business state.

Nevada has also become popular state to incorporate?because of its lack of state corporate income tax, franchise tax and personal income tax. It also has relatively low fees.

However, most small business owners are likely better off incorporating in their own home state. If you are going to be conducting a substantial amount of your business in your home state, it will likely be beneficial to choose that?state to incorporate in.

Even if you incorporate out-of-state, if you do a lot of business in your home state (and/or have a significant physical presence in your home state), you will have to make a filing to ?qualify to do business? in your home state. You will then be subject to the same fees, taxes and regulations as if you had incorporated in your home state in the first place, and you will have paid filing fees (and, perhaps franchise taxes) to more than one state.

Sometimes it pays to keep it simple when you?re incorporating (and?avoid some of the most common incorporation mistakes). Big corporations can often find certain shortcuts that are not available to smaller businesses. Often the simplest answer ? the best?state to incorporate?in is your home state ? the right one for your small business. For more details on this, read Nellie Akalp?s article on Small Business Trends on?where is the ?best state? to incorporate.

If you?re operating a business in multiple states, then your incorporation and business filing requirements get a bit more complicated. For details, read this article from Small Business Trends on?how to handle your business filings when doing business in multiple states.

The bottom line: If your business is like most small businesses, you should probably choose the state where you live as the?state to incorporate.

While there can be benefits to incorporating out-of-state, those benefits usually are biggest for larger companies that have more complex tax filing and regulatory situations. Small business owners who do a majority of business in the same state should usually plan to ?keep it simple? by incorporating in the same state where they reside.

Massage Therapists Often Are Early Detectors of Client's Skin Cancer

While some cancers are falling, Mayo Clinic reported that skin cancer is rising at an alarming rate affecting people under 40, most particularly among young women.??According to an article at massagemag.com, massage therapists can be early detectors of client?s skin cancers since they are often in a unique position to observe skin changes over time among their regular clients.? The purpose of the study was to determine how comfortable bodywork professionals are in discussing suspicious lesions with their clients, and to assess the skin cancer education they had received.

Results of the study showed showed that most massage therapists were more comfortable suggesting that a suspicious skin area might be cancerous rather than actually identifying it as such.? Approximately two-thirds of therapists indicated they had received some eduation regarding skin cancer during their massage training, while approximately 25% obtained education later.? The results also showed that therapists who regularly examined their own skin for lesions were more apt to do the same for their clients.? Also, an increase in the number of clients a therapist saw ? in combination with skin examination ? resulted in a higher level of comfort discussing the topic with their clients.? The investigators noted, ?Massage therapists may be able to serve an important role in the early detection of skin cancer.?

Studies like this continue to show that the benefits of massage are extending into areas far beyond what has traditionally been considered.

Deciding On A Tubing In Water Selecting A Boat Tube Or Other ...

Having fun on the water doesnt just have to include swimming or boating. You can find options for tubing in water that offer hours of enjoyment and even relaxation depending on the water. Tubes for this activity are available in a range of sizes and styles to fit your needs.
Riding a tube behind a boat can be exhilarating and fun for anyone. It is an alternative to skiing which requires tremendous strength and balance. When you are tubing instead, you can simply hang on and enjoy the ride.
The strength required for this activity will depend on the tube as well as the speed of the boat and the roughness of the water. Some tubes are intended to carry a number of passengers at the same time and come equipped with handles that the riders hold on to. There are many different types available.
Deciding which choice you might make can often depend on the need you have as well as the cost. These tubes are specially made to stand up to the rough treatment that they must endure on the water behind a boat. Obviously you want a material that is going to resist damage when as the water rushes past.
The cost of these items is usually dependent on the size and style. Some are very large and intended for floating down a river. Some that are intended to be hauled behind a boat are also very large but are intended for slower speeds at the same time.
As you consider the different options for this activity, of course you need to look at the cost. But you also want to take the time to look at the safety ratings and things like that. You want to look for items that have been proven safe but fun at the same time.
Tubing in water is a great way to enjoy your time on the lake with friends and family. There are a number of options that allow a person to enjoy this type of activity. Floating down the river on a tube for example is a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
Buying a boat tube or other towables can help those who do not ski enjoy that same exhilaration as those who do ski. Enjoying the feeling of flying along across the surface of the water can be great fun for anyone at any age. The speed of the boat is a factor in this activity, so make sure you are selecting a tube that is intended for the speed you have planned.

Stranded by Sandy, air travelers eager to change status

18 hrs.

Stuck. Stranded. In limbo. Whatever you call it, weary fliers grounded by Hurricane Sandy were eager to change their status on Tuesday as airlines and airports began assessing damage from the powerful?storm.

On Tuesday, all New York City-area airports were closed, including John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and Teterboro. JFK International will be reopened Wednesday, but LaGuardia will stay closed "due to extensive damage," said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo during a news conference.

Carriers have canceled?18,000 flights since Sunday, and that number is still expected to grow, according to FlightAware.com.

With no way of getting out of or into the Big Apple and other parts of the East Coast by air, there?s a huge backlog of fliers around the country and the world with nowhere to go.

Some travelers spent the night on cots set up at airports including Newark Liberty, Boston Logan International and Chicago O?Hare International. Others snapped up hotel rooms -- hotel bookings are up 15 percent in New York City and 68 percent in Washington compared to last week, according to data provided by Orbitz.

The question now: When will airline schedules get back to normal?

"A lot of it depends on what kind of damage they assess at the New York metro airports and when those reopen," said Jeanenne Tornatore, senior editor at Orbitz.

"Should flights, for example, start going back out tomorrow on a limited basis, we don't anticipate flight schedules really getting back to normal until late this weekend, early next week," she said.

Related:?Sandy leaves NYC subway system, infrastructure, licking its wounds

There's already a big backlog of travelers who canceled their flights before the storm so there won't be a lot of seats to rebook displaced fliers on, Tornatore noted.

For stranded?travelers, there's nothing to do but wait.?

Claire Conroy, who lives south of Boston, is stuck on the West Coast until Thursday.?Conroy?flew out to San Diego, Calif., with her mother and sister last week to celebrate her niece?s first birthday. When they realized over the weekend that they might have trouble returning Monday as planned, they spent 35 minutes on hold with JetBlue to rebook for a flight on Sunday afternoon. But it was too late.

?When we got to the counter, the flight was still listed as on time but was in fact canceled. The soonest flight we could get on was Thursday afternoon. Even then, only two of us are on that flight -- my sister will be (flying) Friday. That?s how fast the seats were filling,? Conroy said.

Slideshow:?Hurricane Sandy's aftermath

Nicole Abramowski -- who grew up on Long Island and now lives in Berlin, Germany -- was flying home to New York for the first time in over a year to visit friends and family when she got stuck. She made it as far as London, where she was supposed to catch an American Airlines flight to JFK International on Sunday but it was canceled right before the gate opened.

The carrier booked Abramowski on a Thursday flight and put her up in a hotel, but later found out only two nights of her stay are covered and she has to pay for?the rest of her accommodations herself.

?Hotel rooms here are 150-200 pounds a night, which is a whole month?s rent for me in Berlin on my salary and completely unaffordable,? Abramowski said, pointing out that she is stuck in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

?After an hour on the phone and taking a bus back to the airport to speak with them in person, they tell me it's not their responsibility, ?We didn't even have to book you into a hotel for those two nights.??

Her whole hotel is filled with people trying to get to New York, Abramowski said.

?I feel bad for everyone having to deal with this. We have bad timing,? she added.

American Airlines has suspended operations until Wednesday at nine airports in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, including Ronald Reagan Washington National, Dulles International, Baltimore/Washington International, Norfolk International, Philadelphia International, Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Bradley International.

US Airways has similar closures, plus cancellations at airports in Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Delta Air Lines is resuming flying at Boston Logan and the major Washington-area airports on Tuesday, but its operations continue to be shut down in New York.?

United plans to resume inbound flights in the Big Apple on Wednesday. The airline warned that it is experiencing extremely high call volume due to the storm.

JetBlue posted a photo of its planes waiting out Sandy in Puerto Rico and asked passengers for patience.

?We will be ready to start operations as soon as Wednesday morning if the airports and public transportation are open, but we expect it will take much longer to get back to business as usual,? the airline said on its blog.

Cr Samantha Dunn: belgrave south community house, active as ever

belgrave south community house, active as ever

I had the?privilege?of chairing the Belgrave South Community House Annual General Meeting this week.

A vibrant place to be, it was wonderful to hear about all the happenings of the house over the past year.

The house has been active in a range of areas and they never cease to amaze in terms of their willingness to take on new challenges.?

Changes to their Occasional Child Care program now mean that families can access the Child Care Benefit making the program more attractive. The change to approved care also means that the house can receive funding which goes a way to replace the Take a Break funding which was cut by state and federal governments last year.?

The house continues its strong program of adult education as well as offering hobby classes, health and fitness programs, out of hours school care and a range of community development activities.?

I'm always impressed by their range of Disability Services, including Sailability at Lysterfield Lake, Fun 'n' Fitness - a specific exercise class for people with a disability, the Extend Program which focuses on a range of skills development, in home support, the Gardening Group and not to mention the annual celebration of International Day of People with Disabilities which I'm proud to support with funding from my community ward fund.

They are supported by a small core of staff as well as a?committed?group of volunteers, I congratulate them in their efforts, they are part of the social fabric of the area and continue to reach out and provide vital support to community.

ASBDC Biz Blog: Three Cost Effective Ways to Generate Press for ...

Getting the press your business deserves comes down to building relationships with writers and having a compelling product or service.? There are many ways to generate buzz for your business, but below we?ve provided three to generate traction without breaking the bank. Analyze your competition
Are any of your competitors receiving endless amounts of press? Find out which journalists are writing those articles and how you can build a relationship with them. Make sure you only email them when you have something interesting to say. Writers can?t stand pitches that are completely self-promotional. Share your expertise
Most businesses can enhance their online and offline reputations through thought-leadership work. In essence, this means speaking at a conference, conducting a webinar or even publishing written work. Whether you know it or not, you?re likely an expert in your profession and you can certainly differentiate yourself from the crowd by joining and leading the conversation. The return on investment for thought leadership may not be measurable at first, but over time it can be a game-changer for your company.

You do not need to hire a big PR firm
Many companies are familiar with compensating a PR firm thousands of dollars a month and not necessarily being able to measure the return, which is frustrating and expensive. Have you subscribed to one of the email distribution lists that connect writers and publishers to experts and companies for sources to use in their articles? The best in class of these new free distribution lists is Help a Reporter Out (HARO), launched by the PR guru Peter Shankman. It?s very easy to use and it works; we know from experience. A successful pitch will take some trial and error, but it?s certainly cheaper than hiring a PR firm.

Most Computers Usually Aren't Protected Towards Viruses, Malware ...

Malware technology is one of the fastest and increasingly additional threatening versions of terrorism. Criminals around the globe use malware technologies to deceive, cheat, steal, damage and terrorize individuals, companies and corporations.

Malware technology refers to any type of application that may be created with malicious intent. The software program, through deceptive indicates, sneaks into a computer?s operations without an user giving any permission to install the malware.

Lots of many people don?t contemplate malware technologies as terrorism, but a further look shows the powerful connections between conventional terrorism and malware as cyber terrorism.

The goal of malware technologies

Deceive

The technology pretends to become a thing trustworthy or to provide a required service. Instead through deception, malware gains sensitive details (account information, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, pin numbers).

Steal

With the data of a firm or a person, the criminal behind the malware can take more than that person?s identity, steal income and ruin their credit background.

Cripple

Not all malware is always to steal capital or identity. Often malware seeks to steal manage. For people and businesses alike, a loss of control of their details and personal computer systems is usually crippling. Hackers have shut down key web pages that include CNN, Google, New York Instances and other individuals, costing millions of dollars. The malware employed is just not meant to obtain capital for the hacker, but rather to be a show of superfluous power and manage.

Sorts of Malware

Viruses

Trojan horses/Viruses/bots

Malware regularly requires the form of Trojan viruses hidden behind the scenes, stealing and sharing sensitive info with criminals. Remote-controlled digital bots can do the exact same issue and take more than computers too.

Worms

Worms are viruses that install themselves on a personal computer with intention of spreading like an illness. In the past, worms have been spread via e mail attachments. 1 person downloads an e-mail infected having a worm. The individual passes the e-mail along as a result spreading the worm to other people. Worms can steal information, steal an user?s manage on the personal computer and in many cases shut down a sizable network of computers at a designated time, crippling computers across the world.

Spyware

Spyware is often a variety of computer software that installs itself without having an user approving it. Acting and appearing as a regular program, the spyware garners sensitive facts. Spyware will often take the form of Antivirus applications. The programs will say that a laptop or computer an user has a virus that the spyware can eliminate. Hunting like a reputable plan, users spend for the antivirus, giving out sensitive information and facts to criminals in the method, only to be duped by software that they learn is useless.

Adware

Spyware will often attach itself to legitimate applications. Adware is a specific kind of spyware that transmits annoying, repetitive and continuous ads to a computer?s screen, producing ad income for the designer whilst tormenting the laptop or computer user.

In the event the above examples aren?t enough to show how malware technology terrorizes then give consideration to identity theft. Malware engineering is rapidly becoming one particular of your most effective tools to commit identity theft. In turn, identity theft may be the fastest rising crime in the United states of america. The loss of security that includes identity theft amounts to terrorism on a person level. The emotional and economic toll robs innocent persons of personal security. Malware technologies allows identity theft to take place on an enormous scale, draining millions of dollars from the U.S. economic climate every year and funneling it to other nations.

Romney to Business Crowd: Obama Sees You As an "Evil" | Mother ...

Ever since I revealed Mitt Romney's 47 percent rant, tips and tapes have come through the transom?including this and this. And another source who asked not to be identified just sent me an audio recording of a private Mitt Romney fundraiser from earlier this year. At this event, Romney didn't decry half of the nation, but he and Ann Romney each expressed disdain for President Barack Obama, with the Republican presidential candidate asserting that Obama considers businesspeople "a necessary evil" and his wife suggesting that the president was not a "grown-up."

On March 27, as Romney was still fighting for the Republican presidential nomination, he and Ann attended a fundraiser in Irvine, California, at the home of Michelle and David Horowitz, a former cement business owner who runs a private equity fund. The $1,000-per-plate outdoors luncheon (or $2,500 for those wanting to participate in a photo reception with Romney) drew much of Orange County's Republican elite.

Romney mainly delivered his standard stump speech to the 100-person-plus crowd, and he took only three questions. During the more intimate $50,000-per-plate 47 percent fundraiser?in May, Romney didn't give much of a speech, and he spent most of his time with these superdonors responding to their queries. (The bigger contribution apparently earns donors more quality time with the candidate.) But at the Horowitzes' home in the exclusive Shady Canyon neighborhood, Romney did make several revealing comments.

After being introduced, the Republican candidate noted that he had been pushed into his second campaign for president by his wife:

David, you mentioned Ann, and the fact that she insisted that I get in this race. That is the truth. I wanted to talk it over with her. And every time I'd say, "Let's talk about the pros and cons," she'd say, "Talk to the hand, talk to the hand. We're just doing this. We've got to do it." And so she absolutely insisted that I get in this because she was convinced that I was the only one that had the capacity to beat President Obama.

Romney then asked Ann to say a few words, and she explained that she had been so insistent because she did not consider Obama to be a "grown-up":

You know?the ship's going over the waterfall, it's almost there. And we look what's happening in Greece, and we look what's happening around the world, we look what's happening internationally. This is a frightening world, and we need a grown-up, and we need someone that understands the economy. So I'm glad?Mitt is grown up to you all.

(This remark was not a one-off. In August, Ann Romney, talking about the gender gap, said, "I'm hearing from so many women that may not have considered voting for a Republican before that said, it's time for the grown-up to come.")

Romney's pitch to this well-heeled O.C. crowd was heavy on celebrating entrepreneurs. He claimed that Obama and his supporters were opposed to success, declaring, "Heaven help us if we have people who try to divide America between those that have succeeded and those that haven't." And Romney, who possesses not one but two graduate degrees from Harvard, blasted Obama's economic policies for being crafted by Ivy League experts:

What they have in their mind is a vision of America dominated by government, by individuals they respect, people like themselves: highly educated, spent a lot of time in the faculty club at Harvard, and they believe they can guide the economy better than can individuals all pursuing their own dream. It does make sense, after all, that smart people, bureaucrats can sit down and do a better job deciding which type of energy company to invest in, which type of technology to invest in, what kind of health care you should have, who's your provider?all these smart people could do a better job. It makes all the sense in the world as opposed to saying individuals all doing whatever the heck they want, some without education, can go off and build businesses and succeed or fail. And yet that of course, that latter model, is the only one in the history of the world that's ever worked to lift people out of poverty and create permanent prosperity.

Romney repeated his usual found-to-be-false talking points: Obamacare is a government takeover; if it stands, half of the US economy will be "controlled by government." He accused the president of conspiring to cause high energy prices. ("Look, these guys are trying to drive up the price of energy in this country in order for solar and wind to be able to be more economic.")

He dramatically cast the election as a black-and-white contest with Obama waging a "war on business and economic freedom." Romney repeatedly professed his "love" for business and, in particular, the business people before him. Using supercharged rhetoric, he said that Obama had a beef against such people and viewed them as "a necessary evil?and maybe not so necessary":

I'm convinced that if this president is reelected, the war on business and economic freedom will continue. I don't think the president likes you very much. If you're in business, I think he looks at you as a necessary evil?and maybe not so necessary. I love you, all right? I love, I love business. I love people who employ other people, who have dreams and ideas, and are willing to start enterprises, and put people to work?all good things grow from successful enterprises. Businesses?good jobs come from good businesses.

Romney went on to bemoan the fact that some businesses preferred to set up shop in China than the United States, but without mentioning that this is often because China has low wages and weak labor rights and environmental protections:

When I heard the head of Coca-Cola say that the business environment in America is less hospitable than the business environment in China, I knew we had a problem. I want to make sure that America has the most attractive business conditions in the world?that every entrepreneur once again says, "I want to be an American." Whether it's energy or regulation or tax policy or labor policy or legal policy or health care policy?I want America to be the best place for business.

This seemed a clear indication that Romney would place workplace conditions, environmental protections, and other safeguards a far second to industry imperatives. Moments later, the crowd applauded him enthusiastically.

During the brief Q&A, Romney hailed fracking and denounced the new START treaty Obama negotiated with the Russians as kowtowing to Moscow (though 71 senators voted for its ratification). But perhaps his most heartfelt remark came when he was concluding his talk and told these donors, "I want to let you go back to work so you can earn more money to give to me."

You can listen to the full tape here.

UPDATE:?A source who attended the event says there were over 400 people in attendance.

'Homeland' Star Morgan Saylor On 'My So-Called Life,' Claire Danes' 'Faces'

"Homeland" star Morgan Saylor, who plays angsty teen Dana Brody on the Showtime hit, is learning a lot from her more experienced co-stars, including Emmy-winner Claire Danes.

In an interview with Salon.com, Saylor said she watched "My So-Called Life" after starting her job on "Homeland." In fact, Danes' "My So-Called Life" experience was one of the first things the two discussed.

"She came up and she talked about the fact that she was my age while she was doing it," Saylor said. "And we talked about being a teenage actress and missing your real life and living with your mom 24 hours a week and being out of town. It was nice. It was nice to know someone else knew what it was like."

Saylor said she enjoyed the short-lived series. "It?s such a relatable teenage story, not even just for teenagers but for adults. And Claire is so phenomenal in it and there are certain faces she does now, that remind me sooo much of Angela Chase," she said.

Certain faces? Perhaps Danes' Internet-famous crying face?

After taking home multiple awards at the 2012 Emmys, it came as no surprise when Showtime announced it renewed "Homeland" for a third season. However, Danes, who is contracted for years to come, said she was surprised when the show got picked up for its second year.

"To be honest I never expected [the show] to get picked up so I wasn?t sure what it was going to be like, but it?s fun. It's like, 'Oh, there she is again!' I like her a lot," she told GQ UK via The Daily Mail.

Private SpaceX Capsule Lands After Historic Mission to Space Station

This story was updated at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

NASA's first commercial cargo flight ended with a splash today (Oct. 28), when the SpaceX Dragon capsule landed after a landmark mission to the International Space Station.

The unmanned Dragon space capsule, built by the U.S. company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), splashed down into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California at 3:22 p.m. EDT (1922 GMT), ending a three-week visit to the orbiting laboratory.

Dragon began its descent with a de-orbit burn at 2:28 p.m. EDT (1828 GMT), after departing the station at 9:29 a.m. EDT (1329 GMT) as both spacecraft sailed 255 miles (410 kilometers) above Burma. The station's crew used the outpost's robotic arm to release the spacecraft.

"It was nice while she was on board. We tamed her [and] took her home," space station commander Sunita Williams of NASA radioed Mission Control in Houston as the Dragon capsule departed. "Literally and figuratively, there are pieces of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."

The Dragon capsule is returning hundreds of?astronaut blood and urine samples from the space station amid the 1,673 pounds (758 kilograms) of experiments and gear loaded on board. Some of those samples have been waiting for more than a year. NASA's final space shuttle mission landed in July 2011, leaving the agency without a way to return big cargo deliveries to Earth until Dragon's flight. [Photos: Dragon's 1st Space Cargo Delivery]

The spacecraft is expected to be retrieved by a SpaceX recovery crew so the cargo can be delivered to NASA. The mission is the first of 12 commercial resupply flights by SpaceX under a $1.6 billion deal with NASA.

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX (short for Space Exploration Technologies) launched the Dragon capsule toward the space station on Oct. 7 using one of the company's own Falcon 9 rockets and a pad at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The capsule was packed with 882 pounds (400 kg) of supplies to for the station, including 260 pounds (117 kg) of crew gear, 390 pounds (176 kg) of scientific equipment, 225 pounds (102 kg) of hardware and several pounds of other cargo, NASA officials said.

The cargo returning home on Dragon are 163 pounds (74 kg) of crew supplies, 866 pounds (392 kg) of scientific research and 518 pounds (235 kg) of other hardware, they added. ?

SpaceX is the first robotic spacecraft ever to be capable of returning cargo to Earth.

"It has been an historic mission," NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said during undocking commentary. ?

The unmanned cargo ships built by Russia, Japan and Europe are all designed for one-way trips and are intentionally destroyed during re-entry at the end of their missions. The Russian Soyuz capsules that ferry crews to and from the space station have limited cargo return capabilities, NASA scientists have said.

SpaceX was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002 as a private spaceflight company. In May, the company launched its first Dragon capsule test flight to the space station to set the stage for this month's first cargo delivery flight. The next Dragon cargo mission is slated to launch in mid-January.

SpaceX is one of two companies with deals to launch cargo delivery flights on unmanned spacecraft for NASA. The other company, Virginia's Orbital Sciences Corp., has a $1.9 billion contract with the agency for at least eight missions to the station using the new Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft. The first Antares test flight is set for later this year.

With its space shuttle fleet retired, NASA is relying on the Dragon and Cygnus spacecraft to ferry U.S. supplies to and from the International Space Station. The space agency is also supporting the development of new commercial U.S. spacecraft to launch American astronauts on space station trips.

SpaceX is one of four companies currently developing manned private space taxis with NASA funding support. The company is upgrading its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsules to eventually launch crews of seven astronauts into orbit.

Coffee And Espresso 101: Organic Espresso Beans | Food & Drink

You are here: Home / Coffee / Coffee And Espresso 101: Organic Espresso Beans

If you consider yourself a coffee newbie, or if you simply really enjoy your morning cuppa but have no idea what the main difference is between a latte and an au lait, you could find yourself wondering what all the talk is about when it comes to specialty coffees or organic espresso beans.

What exactly is Espresso?

Espresso typically refers to just how an individual makes the coffee. In essence, you make espresso by forcing boiling hot water through finely ground coffee, usually in a really small metal basket that has a handle, called a portafilter. The resulting beverage will be your espresso. Even so, the term espresso could also relate to a style of roast or the fineness of grind. An espresso roast indicates a really dark roast perfect for making an espresso drink, which usually employs beans that have a dark or bold quality. An espresso grind relates to a very fine grind, which is also ideal for producing the espresso beverage.

Espresso Versus Standard Coffee

Espresso and standard coffee are definitely not the exact same product. Considering that you brew espresso under pressure through fine grounds, instead of letting it drip over coarse grounds, as home drip coffee makers do, espresso offers a considerably stronger taste than the vast majority of regular coffees do. And despite the reputation of espresso for being a very caffeinated drink, a regular sized shot of espresso usually contains less than fifty percent the caffeine of a 6 to 8 ounce cup of coffee.

What is Organic?

The term organic, when it is associated with coffee beans, typically refers to those cultivated without the use of pesticides. Certain consumers and farmers, however, in addition extend this definition to include things such as employing alternative resources and cutting down the environmental impact of crop growing. The USDA allows for three distinct categories of organic labeling, dependent on what percentage of organic ingredients are included in the final product. In the event that finding 100 percent organic espresso beans or coffee beans is very important to you, ensure that you find out the distinctions in labeling.

Must You Always Buy Certified Organic Espresso Beans?

With regards to coffee, there are actually a considerable amount of growers out there who utilize organic strategies yet do not market or label their beans as being certified organic. This occurs commonly mainly because the government of that country or area has no certified organic label. The best way to learn the way your beans have been grown will be to investigate where they originated from. Quite often independent coffee shops specializing in obtaining their coffees out of progressive farms throughout the world can let you know about exactly where your coffee originated from and how it was grown.

Home Roasting

If you happen to enjoy do-it-yourself tasks, home coffee roasting might be for you. By roasting your very own coffee or espresso, you will get to experience coffee at the peak of freshness and learn more about the process of coffee producing. A large number of options can be found for the home roaster, from roasting on your stove top to making use of a hot air popper to buying a smaller, household version of what commercial roasters work with.
