My Damage Survey of the Rome Tornado
At approximately 10:04 a tornado touched down in Rome, GA.... It traveled around 3 miles with around 95mph winds and at one point it was around 75yards wide. Not a very wide or long tracked tornado, but if you were hit by it it was life changing. I headed up to Rome yesterday to survey the damage myself to see what I thought since the NWS had just issued a statement that it was an ef1. This will be an analysis of what I saw and my conclusion.

This is the first thing I saw when I pulled up to the site. It looked like total debris slammed all over the place, like a tornado had torn it apart..... Once I got closer I saw something different as I looked at the rest of the building. The back of the building was directly perpendicular to where the wind was coming from. The wind hit that wall, went straight up and lifted the roof from behind and threw it over in one piece. I could tell because all the shingles were pointing down, and nails were pointing up. It all came down as one big piece and then fractured. At this point in time I had determined that this was straight line wind damage.

This house was directly across the street from where that roof was torn off. This actually was a simple assessment for me when we walked upon it. Every single piece of lumber was lined up in the exact same direction and all the trees that were lying down in that same direction too. It was very clear to me that this was straight line wind damage. So I had to figure out in my head how the NWS went with an EF1 when all was seeing was straight line wind damage. The only thing that was saying anything different was that the damage swath was very very narrow..... Straight line wind damage is usually very spread out. I had to go find the beginning of the track.

We wend back about 2 miles from where we were on Kingston Highway to find the starting point of the tornado and what I found floored me. It was a 75 yard wide area of giant pine trees that were again all knocked down in the exact same direction.... I was really scratching my head again on this trying to figure out how the NWS called this event a tornado....... So after thinking for a bit I again focused on the fact that the trees were all lying down in the same direction but was only 75 yards wide and stayed that wide. Also as I turned and looked more towards the right (south) I started seeing trees snapped mid trunk and thrown in directions a bit more towards the center of where this swath was... ahhhh, I was starting to see some convergent patterns where the trees to the right hand side of the path were bent a bit more towards the center of the swath. This is consistent with tornado damage.

As we walked away from the area that had a lot of trees laying down in the same direction we started to see some trees that were laying across each other, the roots were pointing in opposite directions, consistent with swirling winds inside a tornado. At this point in time for this specific location it seemed like tornado damage. But even up the road from there there were a lot of trees laying in the same direction in a very narrow path. And then it clicked.. What I thought was the center of the swath was actually the 12-6 o'clock position of a tornado!!!

It all goes back to the classical physics experiment with throwing a ball from a moving train... If you and I were standing on a flatbed on a train going 60mph and I threw the ball at you that was traveling at 60mph, it would hit you at 60mph. If you were standing on the ground and I was on a train going 60mph and threw the ball at 60 mph, it would hit you at 60mph(the speed of the ball) + 60mph(the speed of the train) = 120 mph!!!! This is called relative motion. So, same with the tornado with its winds (acting like a ball) and the motion of the tornado (the speed of the train) The tornado had max wind speeds of around 70mph according to the NWS, and it was moving at 40mph. so on the right hand side the relative winds (the wind speed the trees felt) was 110mph!!! On the left hand side they felt winds at 30mph which is weak and would do nothing to trees!?
Conclusion
What I had been looking at was the right hand side of the tornado path where with the combined speed of the winds of the tornado plus the forward momentum knocked down a 75 yard wide swath of trees.?

While Tumblr's staff is asking for input from its community regarding its policy change, the language of the relevant content policy addition appears to already be very clear. A distinction is made between content which actively promotes or glorifies self-harm and something such as an off-hand declaration that someone feels so embarrassed she could just die or similar:
Don?t post content that actively promotes or glorifies self-injury or self-harm. This includes content that urges or encourages readers to cut or mutilate themselves; embrace anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorders; or commit suicide rather than, e.g., seek counseling or treatment for depression or other disorders. Online dialogue about these acts and conditions is incredibly important; this prohibition is intended to reach only those blogs that cross the line into active promotion or glorification. For example, joking that you need to starve yourself after Thanksgiving or that you wanted to kill yourself after a humiliating date is fine, but recommending techniques for self-starvation or self-mutilation is not.

What eurocrisis? Hamburg to build $500 million concert hall
Hamburg, Germany aims to build one of the acoustically best concert halls in the world, admist one of Europe's worst economic crises in recent history.

Skip to next paragraph?Christian Becker calls the project ?insane? at a time when libraries are cutting hours and kindergarten prices are up. But Hans Christian Riekhof sees it as ?an investment in the future? that will draw tourists and boost the local economy.
What?s dividing the two Hamburg residents ? and this city on the Elbe River ? is a controversial cultural behemoth. Plans for the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, or ?Elbphilharmonie,? envision a concert hall built on top of a former warehouse on the harbor that could seat 2,150 people in ?acoustically one of the best concert halls in the world,? according to acoustic designer Yasuhisa Toyota, who refurbished the Sydney Opera House in Australia.
City officials see it as a new world landmark that could make Hamburg almost as famous as Paris and New York City. When finished, the 667,000 square-foot glass structure will rise 360 feet above the Elbe River, its 26 floors curling into a series of waves reflecting the sky, water, and city.
?There is something playful, almost crazy about what we are doing,? said Karl Olaf Petters, a spokesman for the project. ?It is not necessary, but by the same token, neither was Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony.?
Part of an ambitious revitalization of the Hamburg Harbor, the concert hall was to be paid for through mostly private money. Now, huge delays and cost overruns have dampened the city?s dreams of grandeur. The hall, it turns out, will cost up to five times its original estimate of $100 million, and the city?s share of the cost has more than quadrupled. The concert hall was slated to open in 2012; now it won?t open until 2015 at the earliest.
?If we were in Paris or in New York that would be fine, but not in such a small town as Hamburg,? complained Mr. Becker, soaking up the sun on the piers of the Elbe River with the half-constructed Elbe Philharmonic Hall shimmering in the distance.
Even so, every Sunday, visitors wearing yellow construction hats are touring the construction site.

A new study published in the American Journal of Transplantation reveals that cigarette smoke exposure, in a cause-effect manner, results in graft rejection that would have been prevented by certain drug treatments.
Led by Zhenhua Dai, MD, PhD, of the University of Texas Health Science Center, researchers used mouse transplant models to investigate the impact of second hand smoke (SHS) on transplant survival and its mechanism of action.
Seven to eight mice per group were exposed to SHS and treated with or without immunoregulatory agents. They were exposed to SHS 4 weeks before they were transplanted with islets under the kidney capsule. SHS was terminated once islet allografts were rejected. Recipient mice were untreated or exposed to SHS. The analysis of graft survival was performed using log-rank tests.
Results showed that SHS indeed harms long-term allograft survival. SHS suppressed expression of an enzyme in the grafts produced by innate immune cells. SHS hindered long-term islet allograft survival induced by CD154 costimulatory blockade via suppressing IDO expression and activity, while overexpression of IDO by islets restored their long-term survival.
These findings for the first time revealed an immunological mechanism underlying allograft rejection precipitated by the exposure to cigarette smoke.
"Many people are not aware of the gradual failure of transplanted organs or grafts that is caused by cigarette smoking, although they do know that smoking can cause cancer as well as respiratory diseases," Dai notes. "Our findings will definitely promote the public awareness of the smoking problem with transplanted patients, which in turn could save their lives by either quitting smoking or avoiding exposure to second hand smoke after transplantation."

One in five Japanese buy groceries on the internet

THE OWNER Ann Gish, 63.
THE COMPANY Ann Gish Inc. designs and distributes luxury bed and table linens and pillows, which are sold at Bergdorf Goodman, NeimanMarcus.com and boutiques nationwide. In 2011, the company opened its own store in Manhattan. Excluding Ms. Gish and her husband, Ann Gish Inc. employs 10 people in the United States.
WHAT THE COMPANY PAYS The company bears the entire premium cost for its workforce, $472 a month per employee. It?provides individual coverage only, but Ms. Gish said that most of her employees are either unmarried or have spouses who get insurance through their jobs. One sales manager, however, has a self-employed husband with a pre-existing condition and a child. Ms. Gish pays the employee?s premiums, and the employee pays the insurance for the rest of her family ? an additional $1,300 a month. ?She used her agent, we used our agent, and this was the best we could do,? Ms. Gish said. ?If she could find a better deal, we?d give her the $500.? Ms. Gish said she is giving serious thought to reducing the share of employee premiums that her company pays: ?I want to see what happens business-wise over the next year, and I want to see what happens when the health care reform kicks in.?
THE PLAN Ann Gish offers preferred provider organization coverage, a form of managed care that favors doctors and hospitals that are in-network. One aspect of the plan that galls Ms. Gish is that doctors must seek permission from the insurer before prescribing some treatments. However, Ms. Gish said, the plan is ?non-gated,? meaning that employees don?t need permission from their primary doctor to see a specialist.
THE INSURER Currently, it?s Aetna; before that, it was Oxford. ?We?ve changed either every year or every two years,? Ms. Gish said, ?because they take away the policy that you have, and they give you a new one that?s more money and generally fewer benefits.? In recent years, premiums have bounced around, Ms. Gish said: $422 in 2009, $479 in 2010, back down to $443 last year, and now back up again. Meanwhile, she said, this year employees face slightly higher co-payments and much steeper deductibles.
THE HEADACHE Pounding and relentless. Even simple tasks, she said, like adding or removing employees from the rolls, are complicated: ?My husband, who does all of the C.F.O. stuff, has spent hours and hours and hours on this. And I spend a couple days a year on it. And I?m not stupid. I?ve started a successful business.?
WHAT DIFFERENCE THE OVERHAUL HAS MADE SO FAR None. She looked into the health care tax credit available to small businesses under the law but found that the average wages her company pays exceed the law?s $50,000 threshold for the credit.
WHAT SHE WANTS FROM REFORM Simplification. Health insurance, Ms. Gish said, ?should be put together in a way that any idiot could understand.? Though Ms. Gish has occasionally read press accounts of how the Affordable Care Act will change insurance, she concedes that she still does not know what to expect. ?I figure when 2014? comes, I?ll have to learn it,? she said. ?But since I feel pretty powerless about doing anything, and since it could all change before then, what?s the point in trying to sink your teeth into it now??

Fabulously directed and infused with great magic, Hugo certainly files under above-average fantasy fare. I can't say I fully concur with the overwhelming critical acclaim, but it's a pleasant journey to take with an amazingly rich visual pizazz. Martin Scorsese may be a stranger to this family-friendly genre, but he's certainly no weaker for it, as he plays his new instrument like he's never done anything else. Apart from the endearing leads played by Asa Butterfield and Chlo? Grace Moretz, I also took a great liking to the wonderful supporting cast. Sacha Baron Cohen is a little more downplayed than usual (no green mankinis this time around), but quite memorable nevertheless as the tenacious station inspector Gustav. As can be said for Sir Ben Kingsley, who brings a lot of passion to his character, as the old toy-maker Georges M?li?s. Not to mention the brief, but excellent performances by Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Emily Mortimer and Jude Law. Sadly, not everything runs like clockwork though. While the film is enjoyable all the way, the progression of the plot sometimes drags and loses momentum, which is one of the reasons why I can't allow myself to give it a higher rating than I have. It also feels a tad outstretched and would have done good in leaving out some of the less essential scenes. Another thing I wasn't too excited about is the blue & orange color palettes. It's become a common trend in Hollywood these days to apply these sort of "mood-setting" touches, but personally I think it just serves to diminish the visual impact. An enchanting and painstakingly crafted piece of film-making nevertheless though, that if anything shows that Scorsese haven't lost any of his flairs for heartfelt story-telling. There is still no way of knowing which types of cancer cells are likely to grow quickly and which slowly, even with all our modern technology. Deciding what makes some cancer cells grow faster than others is a question that still remains unanswered.
