The story goes that Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard with a dream of starting a software company that would revolutionize the world of computing. Shortly after, Microsoft was formed and introduced the world to the idea of the personal computer. After nearly 40 years at the forefront of software and computer development, the company is responsible for some of the most popular computer and technology products in the world.
When most people think of Microsoft, they think of Windows. Launched in the mid 1980s, it fundamentally changed the way that people used computers. Windows has evolved significantly since those early days, with each subsequent version of the software offering something better and more advanced than the previous. The latest version, Windows 7, has helped to maintain the product?s position as the world?s most popular operating system.
Microsoft is also well known for another of its software products, Microsoft Office. Combining a number of the company?s software titles, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, it is the ultimate productivity package. Much of its success is due to the fact that it has the capacity to be used as a cutting edge enterprise solution, but also provides the simplicity of use that has made it very popular with the home and student market.
Microsoft have never been slow to exploit the potential offered by new markets, and while the business may have developed around computers and software, they are also responsible for one of the world?s most popular games consoles. First launched as the X-box, and later becoming the X-box 360, Microsoft?s console competes in the same market as manufacturers who have a much more established reputation when it comes to computer gaming.
The growth in mobile computing and the increased use of smart phones around the world presented Microsoft with another opportunity to create a range of products for a new and profitable market. Starting with Windows mobile phone software, and then developing the hardware to provide the complete Windows Phone package, very few companies are better equipped than Microsoft to bring PC functionality to the mobile phone.
For many years, companies have tried to challenge the dominance of Google in the search engine market, and most have failed. In the past, Microsoft has even tried, unsuccessfully, to provide computer users with a more attractive alternative to Google. So while their latest attempt, Bing, might not be something consumers are buying, it is something they are using, and Microsoft?s answer to Google continues to grow in popularity.
For an organization that started out providing one product that became incredibly popular, Microsoft has gone from strength to strength. Diversifying into a number of different sectors has created a business with a range of market leading products.
