Child Obesity A Costly, Growing Problem In NYSYour Health ...

Costs associated with treating obesity in New York have increased to around $12 billion annually, with childhood obesity reaching dangerous proportions.

The state?s Medicaid program spends more than $4.3 billion a year on obesity-related costs, and private health insurance and Medicare pay out around $7.5 billion annually, according to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

At a speech delivered Wednesday to the Association of New York State Youth Bureaus, DiNapoli called for a concerted effort by state officials and the Department of Health, as well as parents, schools and community-based organizations to find solutions to the health and fiscal problems presented by obesity, and especially childhood obesity.
