UConn women run past Maryland 76-50

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) ? Breanna Stewart and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each scored 17 points, leading top-seeded Connecticut over Maryland 76-50 on Saturday in the Bridgeport regional semifinals.

Stewart got help from fellow freshmen Moriah Jefferson, 10 points, and Morgan Tuck, eight points, in sending the top-seeded Huskies (32-4) to their eighth straight NCAA regional final.

Alyssa Thomas, who had averaged 28.5 points in the tournament, had 13 to lead Maryland, which finished its season at 26-8. Tianna Hawkins and Chloe Pavlech each had 11 points for the Terps.

UConn led 35-26 at halftime, then opened the second half on a 9-0 run.

The Huskies will play Kentucky in on Monday night in a rematch of last year's regional final, which was played just over 100 miles away in Kingston, R.I.

Sudanese rebel group releases 31 kidnapped Darfuris

CAIRO (Reuters) - Sudanese rebels have released 31 Darfuris who they had kidnapped a week ago on their way to a conference for people displaced by the region's decade-long war, the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Saturday.

Conflict has raged in Darfur since 2003 when mainly non-Arab rebels took up arms against the Arab-led government, accusing it of politically and economically marginalizing the region.

Violence has subsided from its peak in 2003 and 2004, but a surge has forced more than 130,000 people to flee their homes since the start of the year, according to the United Nations.

Last week, the international peacekeeping mission UNAMID said an armed group had kidnapped 31 Darfuris who the peacekeepers had been escorting in three buses. The abductors took them to an unknown location.

On Saturday, the ICRC said a faction of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), one of the main Darfur rebel groups, had released the men and handed them over to the Red Cross, according to a statement.

The SLA was not available for comment, and no more details were available about the incident that happened in a border area between Central Darfur State and South Darfur State.

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide and war crimes in Darfur.

Sudan refuses to recognize the court, which it says is biased against leaders who refuse to kowtow to Western powers.

In 2008, the United Nations said about 300,000 people may have died in Darfur's war, a figure some activists say is too low. The government has put the death toll at about 10,000.

Banks score major win in private Libor suits

By Nate Raymond and Carrick Mollenkamp

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The world's biggest banks won a major victory on Friday when a U.S. judge dismissed a "substantial portion" of the claims in private lawsuits accusing them of rigging global benchmark interest rates.

The 16 banks had faced claims totaling billions of dollars in the case, which had been considered the biggest legal threat that they faced aside from investigations being pursued by regulators in the United States, Europe and Britain.

The banks include: Bank of America Corp , Citigroup Inc , Credit Suisse Group AG , Deutsche Bank AG , HSBC Holdings PLC , JPMorgan Chase & Co , Royal Bank of Canada , Royal Bank of Scotland and WestLB AG .

They had been accused by a diverse body of private plaintiffs, ranging from bondholders to the city of Baltimore, of conspiring to manipulate the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor), a key benchmark at the heart of more than $550 trillion in financial products.

In a significant setback for the plaintiffs, U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in Manhattan granted the banks' motion to dismiss federal antitrust claims and partially dismissed the plaintiffs' claims of commodities manipulation. She also dismissed racketeering and state-law claims.

Buchwald did allow a portion of the lawsuit to continue that claims the banks' alleged manipulation of Libor harmed traders who bet on interest rates. Small movements in those rates can mean sizable gains or losses for those gambling on which way the rates move.

The ruling comes at a time when the banking industry is facing legal and regulatory challenges on multiple fronts, including how they originated and sold mortgage loans, as well as questions of whether some have become so big they pose a systemic risk to the global financial system.

While the door was left open for private litigants to refile lawsuits, Buchwald's decision may make it more likely that banks will talk settlement with a significant win in their pocket. The decision also could cast doubt on some of the highest analyst projections about potential Libor damages, and quell some concerns that the banks have not reserved enough for litigation expenses.

The judge's decision comes amid a sprawling regulatory probe in the United States, UK and Europe that has resulted in three banks ? Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, Barclays Plc and UBS AG ? agreeing to a $2.6 billion settlement. More banks are expected to settle in the coming months. Those settlements yielded a trove of internal bank emails that Judge Buchwald said could be used if the plaintiffs want to revise their claims.

As of March 5, at least 22 lawsuits had been consolidated before Buchwald. Several had sought class action status. Others such as Charles Schwab Corp were asserting claims directly on their own behalf.

In a 161-page opinion, Buchwald said she recognized her ruling might be a surprise since several defendants had paid billions of dollars in penalties to government regulatory agencies.

"We recognize that it might be unexpected that we are dismissing a substantial portion of plaintiffs' claims, given that several of the defendants here have already paid penalties to government regulatory agencies reaching into the billions of dollars," the judge said.

But she said unlike government agencies, private plaintiffs needed to meet many requirements under the statutes to bring a case.

"Therefore, although we are fully cognizant of the settlements that several of the defendants here have entered into with government regulators, we find that only some of the claims that plaintiffs have asserted may properly proceed," she wrote.

Michael Hausfeld, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, noted the judge had granted the parties the ability to amend and refile their lawsuit.

"We have the decision under evaluation," he said. "We are considering filing an amended complaint or taking an appeal, but we haven't decided yet."

Representatives for the various banks either declined comment or did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

ALLEGED MANIPULATION

The plaintiffs' lawsuits, like the regulatory probes, center on the way the London interbank offered rate is set?and whether the plaintiffs were harmed by the alleged manipulation of Libor.

Libor, a family of benchmark rates, is set every day in London by a panel of international banks. Banks submit what it costs to borrow from one another for durations ranging from overnight to one year. The rate underpins hundreds of trillions of dollars of investments and trades.

The plaintiffs alleged that the banks on the Libor panel conspired to send in artificial rates.

Three banks have reached settlements with authorities to date. Most recently, Royal Bank of Scotland agreed to pay $612 million to U.S. and British authorities. UBS agreed in December to pay $1.5 billion. Barclays agreed to pay $453 million in June.

The three settlements appeared to do little in convincing Judge Buchwald that the plaintiffs' case should proceed.

But the judge left the door open for the plaintiffs to use information that has emerged in the regulatory settlements. In the Barclays case, for example, one trader asked another to submit a three-month dollar Libor rate of 5.36 percent or higher. The next day, Barclays' submission was 5.36 percent.

"Because the Barclays settlements brought to light information that plaintiffs might not previously have been able to learn, we grant plaintiffs leave to move to amend their complaint," she said.

The cases are In Re: Libor-Based Financial Instruments Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-md-2262.

Army formally declines Purple Hearts for Fort Hood shooting victims

By Jim Forsyth

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - The U.S. Army on Friday formally declined to award Purple Heart medals to the victims of Major Nidal Hasan's shooting rampage at Fort Hood, saying the move would damage his ability to receive a fair trial.

The Army in a position paper said that awarding the medal to those wounded and posthumously to those killed in the November 2009 attack would 'set the stage for a formal declaration that Major Hasan is a terrorist' because the medal is presented to military members who are 'wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States.'

Hasan, 42, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire on a group of soldiers who were preparing for deployment to Afghanistan, killing 13 and wounding 32 before he was shot and permanently paralyzed by two civilian Fort Hood police officers.

He faces the death penalty if he convicted by a military jury on 13 specifications of premeditated murder. His court martial is set to begin in July.

The Army formalized its ongoing opposition to awarding the Purple Hearts in a position paper responding to language inserted in the Defense Authorization Bill, which would require the Secretary of the Army to award the medal.

Some of Hasan's wounded victims and families of the deceased have filed a federal lawsuit and among the demands is that each of the victims be awarded financial compensation and a Purple Heart.

"U.S. military personnel are organized, trained and equipped to combat foreign, not domestic, forces or threats," the Army wrote. "To expand the Purple Heart award criteria to include domestic criminal acts or domestic terror attacks would be a dramatic departure from the traditional Purple Heart award criteria."

A spokesman for the Secretary of the Army did not return a phone call seeking further comment.

Neal Sher, the New York-based lawyer for the Fort Hood victims, called the Army's claims 'rubbish.'

"This is a cynical travesty," Sher said. "The only thing the government has done is guarantee that anything done to help the victims will effectively impair and prevent Hasan's prosecution. These victims have been given the back of the hand by their government."

The Army says it has the interest of the victims in mind, saying any government declaration that Hasan is a terrorist could mean a delay of another 'year or more' in a trial which has already been pushed back several times by lengthy debates over Hasan's beard and other side issues.

"Such an unprecedented action would thwart the real and lasting measure that will bring closure to the grieving and harmed victims, the trial itself," the Army concluded.

Her 'Crazy Obsession' leads to 10,000 celeb pics

By Ashley Majeski, TODAY contributor

Some people will stop at nothing in their quest to become famous. For Vanessa Sky Ellis, however, the goal isn?t necessarily to become famous herself but rather just be near famous people.

In the season two premiere of TLC's 'My Crazy Obsession,' Ellis discusses her fascination with meeting and taking pictures with celebrities. The Brooklyn native spends about eight hours a day "celebrity-spotting" and estimates that she?s collected over 10,000 pictures with celebrities, counting everyone from Angelina Jolie to Rev. Al Sharpton as her conquests.

"I?ll go after whoever, whenever," Ellis said. "Celebrity-spotting is most important to me. It's more important than having a boyfriend, going to work, then doing anything."

Between stalking famous people in New York City during the day and her late-night gig as a bartender, Ellis doesn?t have much free time, and claims to only sleep about two hours a night.

"Me getting another photo with somebody, that?s me achieving," she explained. "That makes me feel good."

In some cases, Ellis? obsession with famous people has made her somewhat famous in her own right. Her fixation on 'Jersey Shore' star Paul "Pauly D" Delvecchio garnered her some camera time during the show?s final two seasons. Ellis would frequently show up at the Shore Store to watch Delvecchio as he worked, and reportedly even tried to sneak into the show?s season 6 premiere party in New York last October. On her Twitter account, Ellis proudly calls herself "Jersey Shore's Real Pauly D stalker."

In addition to Ellis? tales of celebrity hunting, the premiere episode also features a segment with a woman named Chantal that eats and sleeps with her 19 pet rats. Her obsession has caused her marriage to fail, but Chantal refuses to stop buying rats. Other obsessions featured on the episode include a man who wants to be a merman and a woman who can't stop collecting Raggedy Ann dolls.

The show?s second season premieres Wednesday, April 3, at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.

(AP) ? They mostly kept their distance, these supporters and opponents of gay marriage, as they massed Tuesday in front of the Supreme Court to proclaim with signs and slogans their conflicting views about the cutting-edge question before the justices.

People who favor legalizing same-sex marriage carried pictures of gay weddings and families and held signs that read "marriage is a constitutional right." They waved American and rainbow flags, and one man in devil horns danced in pink heels and a rainbow tutu.

Opponents, meanwhile, marched down a roadway in front of the court, hoisting placards including "Every child deserves a mom & dad" and "Vote for holy matrimony."

By the time the court began its session, which on Tuesday dealt with California's ban on same-sex marriage, the sidewalk outside was packed. Supporters spilled over to the other side of the roadway. "Gay, straight, black, white, marriage is a civil right," the crowd chanted at one point, followed by "we honor this moment with love."

Many supporters of gay marriage came with homemade signs including ones that read "a more perfect union," ''love is love," and "'I do!' want 2 B (equals)" Some signs had pictures of gay couples. "Together 34 years," read one, "married with pride," said another.

Gahan Kelley and Bonnie Nemeth, both 69, of Richmond, Va., had matching signs with their California marriage license on one side and a picture of their wedding ceremony on the other. The couple married in California during the 142 days when it was legal.

"This decision can change our lives tremendously," said Kelley of the Supreme Court cases.

Nemeth said she was hopeful that the court would support gay marriage.

"I really think we're going to win," she said.

Another couple, Stacey Parker, 37, and Debbie Sentner, 43, drove from Toledo, Ohio, to Washington to demonstrate. The pair married in Massachusetts in 2009, but their home state doesn't recognize their marriage. On Tuesday they carried signs that said "Tired of being a second class citizen" and "we the people means everyone."

"To us we feel married but we don't really feel complete until we can actually get all the rights and recognition that a lot of people take for granted," Parker said.

While many people were at the court to demonstrate, others stood in line to get inside the court to hear the arguments. Actor-director Rob Reiner, who helped lead the fight against California's Proposition 8, which barred gay couples from marrying in the state, was at the head of the line. Some people had waited since last Thursday ? even through light snow ? for coveted seats to hear the argument.

Supporters of gay marriage were initially the majority of the crowd standing outside the court, but a smaller group stood holding signs backing traditional marriage. Mike Krzywonos, 57, of Pawtucket, R.I., wore a button that read "marriage 1 man + 1 woman." Krzywonos, a retired metal worker, said his group is the "silent majority."

"The whole country does not want this," he said as helped hold a sign that read, "just because you don't get it does not give you the right to change it."

The crowd of opponents swelled just as the court began considering the case not long after 10 a.m. EDT. Opponents staged a march down the street in front of the court as supporters stood on both sides of the roadway. Some conversations between the two sides got heated, even with police escorting the group. Austin Ruse, 56, was one of the people who exchanged words with the other side, asking two women supporting same-sex marriage whether a man should be allowed to marry his adult son.

"If anyone can get married then marriage has no meaning," Ruse said later.

Christine Clark, 47, of Pittsfield, Pa., was participating in the march with her teenage children and their cousin. She said she knows and loves gay people but does not believe in gay marriage.

"We're not hating," said her daughter, Lydia Clark, 13.

Outside the court after the argument had concluded, supporters of same-sex marriage chanted, "Equal justice under the law," the motto inscribed on the face of the marble court building, and cheered as their attorneys, David Boies and former solicitor general Ted Olson, emerged from the court.

Boies called the arguments a "very thoughtful hearing." Asked if the court was ready to make a sweeping ruling, Olson said he had "no idea."

But Olson said public support is in favor of same-sex marriage.

"We are confident where the American people are going with this," he said. "We don't know for sure what the United States Supreme Court is going to do, but we're very, very gratified that they listened, they heard, they asked hard questions, and there's no denying where the right is and we hope that the Supreme Court will come out in that way when they make this decision in June."

Andrew Pugno, an attorney for ProtectMarriage.com, the group that defended Proposition 8 in court, said his side was able to say everything they wanted to during arguments and would look forward to the court's decision.

"I think that we'll see a very reasoned decision from this court," he said.

The court will hear one more day of arguments on the issue of gay marriage. On Wednesday the court will consider a case involving the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Scientists use DNA to quickly unravel relationship between plants and insects

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Studying the relationship between plants and the insects that feed on them is an arduous task, as it must be done through direct observation. It can take years for a researcher to fully understand the diets of a community of herbivorous insects in a tropical rain forest. Now, five Smithsonian scientists are paving a fast track using the DNA found inside the insects' stomachs, potentially turning years of research into months. This method will help scientists understand the ecology and evolution of plant-herbivore interactions more efficiently.

Their findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Plants and insects comprise about 50 percent of all known species on Earth, forming the critical foundation of biodiversity in most terrestrial ecosystems. This study focused on 20 species of rolled leaf beetles in Costa Rica and 33 species of flowering plants in the order Zingiberales that the beetles eat and lay eggs on almost exclusively.

Using specialized DNA extraction methods the scientists obtained a mix of DNA both from the actual insect and from the insect's stomach contents. They used DNA markers specific to animals to obtain DNA barcodes for each insect species and markers specific to plants to identify the plant species in each insect's diet.

"What makes this study unique is that we developed DNA extraction techniques and full DNA barcode libraries that allowed us to identify host plants to the species level," said Carlos Garc?a-Robledo, a post-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian and lead author of the study. "Another unique feature of this study is that we invested several years in the field identifying the diets of insect herbivores using direct observations. This baseline data allowed us for the first time to test the accuracy of DNA barcodes to identify insect diets."

Matched against the data gathered from prior direct observation, the information derived from this DNA stomach-content study was nearly identical, yet had taken only fraction of the time and effort.

(AP) ? A New Jersey man feels "pure joy" at winning a $338 million Powerball jackpot but has no idea what he will do with the money ? except buy a car, to replace his feet as his primary mode of transportation, he said.

Dominican immigrant Pedro Quezada, 45, and his wife, Ines, appeared at New Jersey lottery headquarters Tuesday to officially claim the prize. Both came in jeans, accompanied by four of his eight siblings and two nephews.

The former bodega owner-operator, who came to the United States from the city of Jarabacoa 26 years ago, said his mind is not clear enough yet to figure out how he will use the money or where he might live.

He did say he could use a good car. Asked what kind of car he has now, he said, "My feet."

Lottery officials said Quezada had decided to accept the winnings in the form of a lump-sum payment worth $221 million, or about $152 million after taxes. It's the fourth-largest jackpot in Powerball history.

He showed up Monday afternoon at the liquor store in Passaic where he purchased the ticket, not knowing if he held the winner. The ticket was validated at 4:17 p.m., giving him less than 24 hours to weigh his future as a multimillionaire before appearing at the news conference.

He was asked questions in Spanish and English and answered all the questions in Spanish, with a translator standing next to him. He was peppered with questions about he would spend the money.

"It has to change," he said when asked about how his life would be different now. "Imagine ... so much money. But it will not change my heart."

He said he would share his winnings with family members and would use some to help his community, though he didn't yet know how. He said his wife of nine years, Ines Sanchez, could have "whatever she wants."

When he realized he had won, he said, "I felt pure joy, just happiness."

Up until last year, Quezada had worked 15-hour days at a bodega in his adopted hometown of Passaic, in northern New Jersey. His son now runs the small grocery.

He said his bodega days are over, and given all the money he won, he doesn't plan to let his son keep working there, either.

The bodega has been robbed in recent years, and there was a fire there.

But on Tuesday, Quezada would not talk about any of the hard times that had befallen him in the past.

"My life has changed," he said.

When she got the call from him Monday, his wife said: "I had no words. ... My heart wanted to come out of my chest."

"All I can say is I feel very happy that God has blessed us with this prize," said Sanchez, who is from Tlaxcala, Mexico.

Quezada is the father of five children, ranging in age from 23 to 5. He has one grandchild.

In the Dominican Republic, Eliana Quezada, the winner's 26-year-old niece, was thrilled by the news of her uncle's massive windfall.

"One of my aunts called me and told me that my Uncle Pedro won the lotto, then I saw him on TV," she said Tuesday in Jarabacoa. "I was happy, happy, so I ran into the street!"

The single mother of two children is one of the winner's few relatives still living in the Dominican Republic. Most migrated to the United States years ago, and she said she hadn't seen her uncle in about 10 years.

When asked whether she had any expectations now that her lucky uncle was an incredibly wealthy man, Quezada, a manicurist, said she would love for him to bankroll a trip for her to visit the U.S. to see her many relatives.

"I would like my uncle just to take me there to see my family, my grandparents and my uncles," she said.

The largest Powerball jackpot ever came in at $587.5 million in November. Nebraska still holds the record for the largest Powerball jackpot won on a single ticket ? $365 million ? by eight workers at a Lincoln meatpacking plant in February 2006.

Powerball is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

When You Hate Your Job, Take on More Work (Not Less)

When You Hate Your Job, Take on More Work (Not Less)Loathing your place of employment might not directly inspire you to take on more work, but you should consider it nevertheless. As Lindsay Olson, writing for US News, explains, more work can lead to better opportunities:

While it might seem counter intuitive to take on additional assignments, it actually could make you happier, says Carniol: "The key is to find tasks that you would enjoy taking on, and volunteer for these extra assignments. With any luck, it may lead to a transition in your normal work towards these volunteered tasks."

Aside from other possibilities, you might wind up getting a raise for working harder. At the very least, you'll have something to occupy your time and, potentially, distract you from thoughts of boredom and dissatisfaction. Additionally, you don't have to take on tasks at work. Instead, you can seek out work you like. This may seem like added stress, but if you're using your time to do something you enjoy that could potentially lead to a job you don't hate in the future you'll be doing yourself a huge favor.

Significant insights into common form of autism: Study identifies genetic connections in 15q duplication syndrome

Mar. 26, 2013 ? A new study published in the March issue of Autism Research from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur researchers is making the genetic connections between autism and Chromosome 15q Duplication Syndrome (Dup15q).

The Memphis researchers determined that the maternally derived or inherited duplication of the region inclusive of the UBE3A gene (also known as the Angelman/Prader-Willi syndrome locus) are sufficient to produce a phenotype on the autism spectrum in all ten maternal duplication subjects. The number of subjects was too small to determine if parental duplications do not cause autism. The team assembled the largest single cohort of interstitial 15q duplication subjects for phenotype/genotype analysis of the autism component of the syndrome.

Chromosome 15q Duplication Syndrome (Dup15q) results from duplications of chromosome 15q11-q13. Duplications that are maternal in origin often result in developmental problems. The larger 15q duplication syndrome, which includes individuals with idic15, manifests itself in a wide range of developmental disabilities including autism spectrum disorders; motor, cognitive and speech/language delays; and seizure disorders among others. While there is no specific treatment plan, therapies are available to address or manage symptoms.

Previous research suggests that as many as 1,000 genes may contribute to autism phenotypes, but as much as 1-3 percent of all autism spectrum disorder cases may be a result of 15q11-q13 duplication alone.

The researchers also found through EEG evaluations a pattern that looks like the type of signal you see when individuals take GABA promoting drugs (benzodiazepines). The lead researcher on this study, Lawrence T. Reiter, PhD, says this signal gives clinicians a clue about what types of anti-seizure medication may be most useful in children with 15q duplications.

Reiter says genetic testing can help families connect to resources, like the Dup15q Alliance. Reiter is an associate professor in Department of Neurology with an adjunct appointment in Pediatrics at UTHSC.

"If a pediatrician suspects autism due to hypotonia and developmental delay, I highly recommend they order an arrayCGH test. Duplication 15q is the second most common duplication in autism. The test will help families in future treatments specific to this sub-type of autism," he said.

Reiter collaborated with UTHSC and Le Bonheur Neurologist Kathryn McVicar, MD, and Geneticist Eniko K. Pivnick, MD. The study was funded by the Herbert and Mary Shainberg Neuroscience Fund. Reiter serves on the scientific advisory board for the Duplication 15q Alliance and Idic15 Canada.

Losing wetlands to grow crops

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Getting enough to eat is a basic human need -- but at what cost to the environment? Research published in BioMed Central's journal Agriculture & Food Security demonstrates that as their crops on higher ground fail due to unreliable rainfall, people in countries like Uganda are increasingly relocating to wetland areas. Unless the needs of these people are addressed in a more sustainable way, overuse of wetland resources through farming, fishing, and hunting will continue.

In 2009 it was estimated that about a third of Uganda's wetlands had been lost to growing crops and grazing. While the environmental significance of wetland loss is important, so are National Food Security targets and the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people who suffer from hunger by 2015. In order to evaluate how people are using the wetlands researchers from Makerere University, Uganda, with financial support from IDRC surveyed residents living in either Lake Victoria crescent, Kyoga plains, and South Western farmlands.

The survey revealed that more than 80% of people in these areas use wetland resources including collecting water, catching fish, hunting bush meat (Sitatunga, a type of antelope, and wild rat), and harvesting wild fruits and vegetables. Some of these they consume but others they sell in order to be able to buy food. Over half admitted to growing crops in the nutrient rich soil wetlands with its ready water supply. The families who were most likely to use the wetlands in this way were the ones who had the least access to other sources of food.

The locals blame their bad harvests on global warming, and as global weather systems change this can only get worse. Dr Nelson Turyahabwe explained, "Food insecurity is a real problem across the world. In Uganda the families most at risk tended to have younger or female household heads, or were less educated. Large families were also at high risk of not having enough to eat. In these cases use of wetlands allows families to survive. In designing sustainable use policies for wetlands the needs of humans also needs to be considered."

Acoustic monitoring of Atlantic cod reveals clues to spawning behavior

Mar. 22, 2013 ? For decades researchers have recorded sounds from whales and other marine mammals, using a variety of methods including passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) to better understand how these animals use sound to interact with each other and with the environment. Now, for the first time, researchers report using this technology to record spawning cod in the wild.

Acoustic behavior in cod has been of interest for several decades, but few studies have observed their use of sound as part of reproductive behavior. Although both sexes produce low frequency "grunts," only male Atlantic cod make this sound during spawning season.

Researchers from NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) and their colleagues from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), School of Marine Science & Technology at UMass Dartmouth (SMAST), and Cornell University's Bioacoustics Research Program recently reported their findings, online, in the ICES Journal of Marine Science.

"Few current coastal cod spawning sites are known, especially given historical data that indicate many cod spawning sites once existed along the New England coast. Passive acoustics makes locating potential sites much easier." said study co-author Sofie Van Parijs, who heads the passive acoustics group at NOAA Fisheries' Woods Hole Laboratory.

The findings have implications for conservation and management of this iconic species and possibly for other recreational and commercial fish species. Species in more than 100 families of fish are known to produce sounds. The cod family contains several sound-producing species, including haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), pollock (Pollachius virens) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

The researchers report on a 2011 pilot study in northern Massachusetts Bay. A single marine autonomous recording unit (MARU) was deployed at a depth of 51 meters (168 feet) within a seasonal fishery closure area established to protect a coastal cod spawning aggregation.

The MARU recorded continuously for 75 days during the spring spawning season, with the acoustic sounds confirmed as cod grunts. Cod were also captured in the vicinity of the MARU as part of a tagging study being conducted concurrenty at that time by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) confirming that cod were present.

Male cod grunts were recorded on 98 percent of the recording days. The grunts, were most often heard during daylight hours, and were most common in late May and early June. The MARU was deployed from April 14 through June 27

"We acoustically captured the start of the 2011 spawning period but not the end," said Van Parijs. "Future deployments of multiple MARUs over larger areas and in conjunction with tagging studies could help determine movement patterns of cod in the spring, and give a better picture of how cod are distributed within the spawning protection area. In addition, underwater cameras could provide insight into the structure of the spawning aggregation."

Atlantic cod are known to gather in high concentrations in very small areas to spawn, sometimes forming vertical columns or "haystacks." They often return to the same location to spawn, a behavior known as spawning site fidelity.

In the spring of 2012, the researchers deployed an array of nine MARUs in the same area as the 2011 pilot study to record cod acoustics through an entire spawning season and over a larger area.

Lead study author Keith Hernandez, formerly a researcher in Van Parijs' group at NEFSC and now a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California, says human-produced sounds might mask cod grunts in coastal areas with high human activity, an issue of concern since grunts and other sounds can be used to advertise for females and warn off competitors.

The next steps for passive acoustic monitoring are to explore the size and extent of known cod aggregations, and to locate other spawning aggregations in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank region. Researchers also need to determine if the grunt data can be used to develop an index of relative cod abundance.

"We're already looking at the acoustic data we've collected from other projects in the region, including the Ocean Noise Budget in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and other offshore monitoring studies," said Van Parijs. "We continue to work with colleagues at the Mass DMF, whose cod tagging studies contribute core information and complement federal efforts."

The study was funded by NOAA's Ocean Acoustics Program.

What Is A CMS?

A CMS, or Content Management System, is a type of program usually built with PHP that is meant to help manage your content. This system allows you to easily publish, edit and modify posts much more easily than with a static HTML page.

Getting a CMS onto my site must be complicated, right? Nope. If you have the standard cPanel, all you need to do is find a program called: Softaculous,? Fantastico de Luxe,? or QuickInstall. Then, simply just follow the directions. It takes around 1-3 minutes before your site is ready.

cpanelcms

Most people associated CMSs with blogs because the vast majority of blogs are made with them, but the truth is that a CMS can be used to build business websites, online stores and many other types of websites.

Aside from making it easier to publish and manage content, a CMS will often dynamically create new pages for you, along with a custom navigation schema that will evolve and grow as you post more content.

CMS Vs. HTML Only Site

Creating a blog site with only HTML pages is definitely outdated strategy. If you want to manage content with only HTML,? you need to do a lot of work. First of all, you need to add HTML tags around your entire post for paragraphs, subheaders, bolding and anything else.

You then need to create a new HTML pages in your server by making a new HTML file. The file needs to connect to your CSS document for the proper design, and you then need to ensure that you manually update your navigation so that people can reach the new page with ease.

Another thing you have to consider, is if you wanted to update your header or footer using HTML. You would have to go to every single page on your site to update them. With Content Management Systems, you can update the header or footer once in the admin panel and you?re done.

A CMS does most of this work for you. If you?re just a blogger, all you need to do is write in the CMS?s administrative panel or paste a document from Word, publish the post all everything else is automatic. Not only that, but you can easily go back and edit or update a post without having to change the original HTML file.

Another additional benefit is that most CMSs have additional programs and widgets that can be added to them. This allows you to customize and modify your website until it is perfect. This can often be done with HTML pages, but it takes much more work.

Basically, a CMS allows people with only knowledge of Microsoft Office to get their thoughts on the internet.

Types of CMSs

There are dozens of great CMSs, but there are four that I consider the best. They are: WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and CMSMS.

WordPress is by far the best for blogs and anyone that wants to just quickly build a website in a few minutes. Reviewpon is actually built on a WordPress, pretty impressive, hug? Installing and using WordPress is easy. While it doesn?t have quite as much power as Joomla and Drupal, it has a ton of plug-ins and it?s best for people that aren?t technically inclined.

Joomla and Drupal have their differences, but they are both made to give you a fully customizable experience. These CMSs are best for larger and more complex websites because you are given much more control. At the same time, this comes at a price. Both of these systems are harder to use than WordPress, so you will need to know some coding to bring out their full power.

Lastly is CMS Made Simple or CMSMS. This is an unobtrusive CMS that you can easily add into your existing website. This isn?t quite as powerful as the other systems, but it?s not meant to be. It?s meant for website developers that need a CMS, but not one that will take over the entire website. This is typically used for smaller projects where content will occasionally be updated and published.

1 dead, 1 injured after Utah mine collapse

By James Nelson, Reuters

SALT LAKE CITY - A miner was killed and another injured on Friday when part of a tunnel roof collapsed at a coal mine in central Utah, authorities said.

The miner was killed in the cave-in at the Rhino mine in Bear Canyon, 10 miles from Huntington in central Utah, which was reported shortly after 3 p.m. local time, the Emery County Sheriff's Office said.

Rescue workers recovered one injured miner at the site, who was taken to the Castleview Hospital in Price, Utah, for treatment, Sheriff's office spokeswoman Molly Barnes said.

"Members of the Rhino mine rescue team have recovered the body of the second coal miner," Barnes said. She said his identity would not be released until his family had been informed.

The Rhino mine is part of the Castle Valley Mining Complex, according to news reports. A call to Rhino Resource Partners, which owns the operation in Emery and Carbon Counties, Utah, was not returned.

The mine is just a few miles from a coal mine at Crandall Canyon, Utah, where a collapse in August 2007 trapped and killed six workers 1,800 feet underground in a cave-in so powerful that it caused a magnitude 3.9 seismic waves.

Three rescue workers were killed in a second collapse ten days after the initial disaster.

Joe Piccolo, the mayor of the nearby mining town of Price, where the injured miner was taken for treatment, said local communities in the Utah coal belt had "always sustained themselves through grief stricken situations."

"It's a dangerous occupation, but we will pull together," he told Reuters.

Barnes could not confirm the condition of the injured miner. Piccolo said he had been treated and released from hospital.

First images released from newest Earth observation satellite

Mar. 21, 2013 ? NASA and the Department of the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have released the first images from the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) satellite, which was launched Feb. 11.

The natural-color images show the intersection of the United States Great Plains and the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming and Colorado. In the images, green coniferous forests in the mountains stretch down to the brown plains with Denver and other cities strung south to north.

LDCM acquired the images at about 1:40 p.m. EDT March 18. The satellite's Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) instruments observed the scene simultaneously. The USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., processed the data.

"We are very excited about this first collection of simultaneous imagery," said Jim Irons, LDCM project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "These images confirm we have two healthy, functioning sensors that survived the rigors of launch and insertion into Earth orbit."

Since launch, LDCM has been going through on-orbit testing. The mission operations team has completed its review of all major spacecraft and instrument subsystems, and performed multiple spacecraft attitude maneuvers to verify the ability to accurately point the instruments.

The two LDCM sensors collect data simultaneously over the same ground path. OLI collects light reflected off the surface of Earth in nine different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, including bands of visible light and near-infrared and short-wave-infrared bands, which are beyond human vision. TIRS collects data at two longer wavelength thermal infrared bands that measure heat emitted from the surface.

By looking at different band combinations, scientists can distinguish features on the land surface. These features include forests and how they respond to natural and human-caused disturbances, and the health of agricultural crops and how much water they use. Data from LDCM will extend a continuous, 40-year-long data record of Earth's surface from previous Landsat satellites, an unmatched, impartial perspective that allows scientists to study how landscapes all across the world change through time.

"These first scenes from the new Landsat satellite continue the remarkable output from the Landsat program with better, more useful imagery and information," said Matthew C. Larsen, associate director for climate and land use change at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va. "We are gratified that this productive partnership between USGS and NASA has maintained the continuity and utility of this essential satellite tool, providing the foundation for land and water management around the globe."

As planned, LDCM currently is flying in an orbit slightly lower than its operational orbit of 438 miles (705 kilometers) above Earth's surface. As the spacecraft's thrusters raise its orbit, the NASA-USGS team will take the opportunity to collect imagery while LDCM is flying under Landsat 7, also operating in orbit. Measurements collected simultaneously from both satellites will allow the team to cross-calibrate the LDCM sensors with Landsat 7's Enhanced Thematic Mapper-Plus instrument.

"So far, our checkout activities have gone extremely well," said Ken Schwer, LDCM project manager at Goddard. "The mission operations team has done a tremendous job getting us to the point of imaging Earth." During the next few weeks, this team will calibrate the instruments and verify they meet performance specifications.

After its checkout and commissioning phase is complete, LDCM will begin its normal operations in May. At that time, NASA will hand over control of the satellite to the USGS, which will operate it throughout its planned five-year mission life. The satellite will be renamed Landsat 8. USGS will process data from OLI and TIRS and add it to the Landsat Data Archive at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science Center, where it will be distributed for free via the Internet.

Yahoo acquires mobile app created by former employees

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc acquired a small mobile start-up company that was founded by former employees of the struggling Web portal two years ago.

Yahoo did not disclose the price of its deal to acquire Jybe, which developed a mobile app that recommends movies, books and restaurants based on data contained in social networks.

Yahoo said it would shut down the Jybe service, while five Jybe engineers and data scientists, all ex-Yahoo staffers, would focus on Yahoo's efforts to bolster its product line-up.

Since Marissa Mayer became Yahoo chief executive in July she has made several small, so-called acqui-hires, similar to the Jybe deal, that have brought small teams of software engineers focused on mobile products to Yahoo. Wednesday's deal comes amid media reports that Yahoo is also in talks to acquire a controlling stake in video website Dailymotion from France Telecom-Orange, which would represent Mayer's biggest deal to date.

Shares of Yahoo were off 15 cents at $22.02 in midday trading on Wednesday.

Bears part ways with veteran LB Brian Urlacher

CHICAGO (AP) ? Brian Urlacher wanted to re-sign with the Chicago Bears.

Instead, they're parting ways with the veteran linebacker after 13 years.

General manager Phil Emery said Wednesday that the team couldn't agree on a contract with Urlacher, for years the heart and face of the franchise. He is now a free agent after being slowed by a knee problem and then missing the last four games of the season with a hamstring injury.

"We were unable to reach an agreement with Brian and both sides have decided to move forward," Emery said in a statement. "Brian has been an elite player in our league for over a decade. He showed great leadership and helped develop a winning culture over his time with the Bears. We appreciate all he has given our team, on and off the field. Brian will always be welcome as a member of the Bears."

The 34-year-old Urlacher, an eight-time Pro Bowl player, started 180 games from 2000 through 2012, recording a team-record 1,779 tackles. The ninth overall selection in the 2000 draft has 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles. He was the AP's defensive player of the year in 2005 and helped lead the 2006 team to the Super Bowl.

"Over the last 13 years Brian Urlacher has been an outstanding player, teammate, leader and face of our franchise," chairman George McCaskey said. "As Bears fans, we have been lucky to have such a humble superstar represent our city. He embodies the same characteristics displayed by the Bears all-time greats who played before him and he will eventually join many of them in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We thank Brian for all he has given our team and our city. He will always be a part of the Bears family. We wish him the very best."

Urlacher told the team's flagship radio station WBBM-AM in Chicago that he was not shocked that it came to this.

"I am definitely not surprised. I kind of had this feeling this whole offseason with the way the whole thing was being handled," Urlacher said. "We made an offer, the Bears asked us to make an offer early, so we did. Never heard back from them. They made an offer, we responded to their offer and it was more like an ultimatum is what it was. It was, Sign this contract or we are going to move on. And I didn't feel like that was the direction I wanted to go."

The parting with Urlacher is just the latest change in what's been a busy offseason for Chicago.

The Bears fired coach Lovie Smith after a second straight late collapse left them out of the playoffs for the fifth time in six years, although they did finish with 10 wins.

They replaced him with the offensive-minded Marc Trestman, hoping he could get the most out of quarterback Jay Cutler, and addressed two major issues in free agency by signing left tackle Jermon Bushrod from New Orleans and tight end Martellus Bennett from the New York Giants.

Trestman also said that the Bears wouldn't change much from the cover-2 scheme they ran under Smith, but he offered what seemed like lukewarm endorsements when asked in recent weeks about Urlacher.

Now, they're parting ways. And the Bears have big holes to fill at the position.

Their only starting linebacker under contract is Lance Briggs. Strong side linebacker Nick Roach ? who also saw time in the middle ? signed with Oakland.

It's not clear what's next for Urlacher. He had said he wanted to return to the Bears and had posted pictures on Twitter in recent weeks indicating he was working his way back into shape, but whether he will latch on with another team remains to be seen.

His agents did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Urlacher sprained his medial collateral ligament and partially sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the 2011 regular-season finale against Minnesota and hasn't been the same since then.

He barely participated in training camp, had an arthroscopic procedure in mid-August to relieve the swelling, and spent most of the season trying to regain his old form.

Then, he came up lame in coverage on the second-to-last snap of the Bears' overtime loss to Seattle in early December, an injury that ended his season and his tenure with the Bears.

Former Bears defensive end Alex Brown said it was a "sad day" on Twitter and called Urlacher the "best football player I have ever had the pleasure of stepping on the field with."

A safety with lightning speed, the 6-foot-4 Urlacher initially lined up at strong side linebacker for the Bears but lost the job to Roosevelt Colvin. He made the switch to middle linebacker during his first season when Barry Minter was injured and went on to become the NFL's defensive rookie of the year, the start of a long run that saw him anchor a defense that consistently ranked among the league's best.

Now, his run with the Bears is over.

Asked what he'll miss the most about his time in Chicago, Urlacher told WBBM, "The No. 1 thing is my teammates. I am going to miss them the most."

Restaurant inspections, Phil's Southern Cooking | Food and More ...

A follow-up inspection usually leads to a higher health score for restaurants needing to improve. There?s a little time to fix problem areas or retrain employees before the inspector comes back.

But for Phil?s Southern Cooking in Stockbridge a second inspection pulled their score down not up.

A few employee mistakes were costly. Twice, an employee was observed putting on gloves without washing his hands. And a food prep employee was drinking out of a cup that had no lid or straw.

Both violations are risk factors for food borne illness and carry more weight in the final health score, according to the Henry County health inspector.

The restaurant at 4727 N. Henry Boulevard was given a 65/U on the re-inspection. Its previous routine health score was a 73/C.

In other violations, food items were stored improperly in two coolers. Raw link and ground sausages were shelved above cooked sausages, and raw eggs were above fresh green peppers and lemons.

Also, ?crowder? peas and corn were not being held at a hot enough temperature on the buffet line. The peas were discarded and the corn was reheated to the proper temperature.

Cooked ground sausage wasn?t cooled within an adequate time period to ensure food safety. And the chlorine sanitizer solution used to wipe down food contact surfaces was too weak.

An employee at Phil?s said the inspector will be back for yet another visit later this month.

In other news, a? recently featured restaurant, Bourbon Street Caf? in Perimeter Mall, was re-inspected and scored a 92/A.
