Firefighters in Atlantic City took their oaths of office in unusual fashion last week when Apple's iPad was used in place of the traditional paper-bound Bible.

NBC 40 reports that a short ceremony was scheduled to promote a number of Atlantic City Fire Department workers to Battalion Chief and Fire Captain, but those proceedings were halted when attendees realized no one had a Bible in the City Council Chambers.

In the past, the ceremony would have been cancelled in a situation like this because a Bible is required for firefighters to agree to the oath. Fortunately, and as a sign of today's digital age, one attendant brought his Apple iPad along with him and volunteered for the tablet to be used in the ceremony.

Ceremony officials agreed that the presence of an unspecified Bible app on the iPad made it fit for ceremonial purposes, and so the 9.7-inch device was subsequently used for the firefighters to swear their oaths.
