After a tough 45-14 loss to the Ohio Bobcats (8-1 overall, 4-1 Mid-American Conference), the Eastern Michigan University Eagles (1-8 overall, 0-5 MAC) have yet to beat an in-conference opponent.
The Eagles got the ball to start the game and put up a 53-yard drive, coming away empty after Dylan Mulder missed a 39-yard field goal, just hitting the left upright.
Ohio took advantage and scored very quickly after running back Beau Blankenship took it in for a two-yard touchdown run, putting the Bobcats up 7-0.
Midway through the first quarter, Ohio?s Blankenship coughed up a fumble that was recovered by Eagles? defensive back Alex Bellfy on the Ohio 28-yard line.
EMU capitalized on that turnover when quarterback Tyler Benz hit running back Ryan Brumfield for a 17-yard touchdown pass, tying the
game at seven a piece.
Early in the second quarter the Bobcat offense drove the ball inside the redzone, but couldn?t get the touchdown. Ohio settled for a 25-yard field goal off the foot of Matt Weller to put them ahead 10-7.
After the Eagles punted the ball away on their next drive, Ohio found their way into the endzone with a seven-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Tettleton to wide receiver Chase Cochran, extending their lead with a score of 17-7.
The Eagles scored one more time before halftime when Brumfield scored for the second time, with a three-yard touchdown run.
The Bobcats then scored with 11 seconds until halftime when Tettleton passed 19-yards to wide receiver Donte Foster, putting them ahead of EMU 24-14.
EMU?s first drive of the third quarter lasted eight minutes and 44 seconds for 19 plays, but ended with a Jay Karutz punt that was downed on Ohio?s one-yard line.
With their heels in their own endzone to start the drive, the Bobcats still managed to score after a huge play, when Tettleton connected with Foster for a 79-yard touchdown catch on the fourth play of the drive. The Bobcats led the Eagles 31-14.
After the Eagles got into the redzone early in the fourth quarter, Benz?s pass to tight end Garrett Hoskins was tipped into the air and intercepted by Ohio linebacker Keith Moore at the seven-yard line.
Ohio scored two more times before the end of the game when running back Ryan Boykin had a 13-yard touchdown rush with 5:40 left in the game and when running back Daz? Patterson ran it in for 29-yards with 1:33 to go.
Benz had another rough week, completing only nine passes out of 21 attempts for 138 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception while getting sacked four times.
Oddly enough, Alex Gillett led the team in receptions, with three
catches for 42-yards and a long of 21.
Bronson Hill ran the ball 25 times with a total of 121 yards and a long of 18.
Brumfield carried the ball 15 times for 39-yards with a touchdown and caught the ball twice for 23 yards and another touchdown.
There were some good individual efforts on the defensive side of the ball. Bellfy totaled 13 tackles, linebacker Justin Cudworth had 11 tackles, true freshman linebacker Hunter Matt got involved in eight tackles and even defensive end Devin Henderson came away with an interception in the second quarter.
With a few extra days of rest, the Eagles should be well prepared as they come home to play in-state rival Central Michigan University (3-6 overall, 1-4 MAC) Saturday Nov. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium.
